I can actually agree with this quote from them. Mario 1 fucking sucks to play now. It doesn't change that it ruled at the time and did a lot of great things for games.

And I can also agree with something someone (I think James) said about Pac-man: it was never, ever fun.

Mario 3 and Super Mario World still hold up as great platformers to this day, though.

GTA3

The problem with the GTA franchise is that Take-Two has whored it out on the PS2 so much that the game's have become boring. They always add new cars, area's and sometimes new abilities (like jumping fences) but the core gameplay hasn't been updated (cops don't pursue you on foot and jump over fences after you, the targetting system is still bush league garbage).

Rockstar made a legitimately fun experience, and because Take Two has nothing else to lean on they forced Vice City and San Andreas out and now the market is a bit oversaturated. I'm at the point where I'll probably pass on GTA 4 if it doesn't improve the actual core gameplay elements because I'm tired of causing havok in these games. I've played it to death already.

I'm probably even at the point where making funner cops and combat probably wouldn't push me over to buy a new one, either.

Well, I dont have the issue they review it in, but I have the Aug 99 (Vol 7, Iss 8 - RPG blow out special) and the say it will reviewed in the next issue.

GF was know for overrating games quite frequently. Just a few examples -

Jan 99 -

Apocalypse for PS - 91, 93, 90. This game starring Bruce Willis was not very good.
Asteroids for PS - 87, 94, 90
Brave Fencer Musahi - 91, 85, 88
Bust A Groove - 97, 95, 94
Deception 2 - 95, 87, 89
Glover for N64 - 94, 88, 94
South Park N64 - 87, 85, 89

March 99 -

Silent Hill - 92, 96, 88
Syphon Filter - 97, 92, 94
Snowboard Kids N64 - 84, 85, 93
Sonic Adventure DC - 100, 100, 100

Just a few examples. I loved them b/c they stuck with Saturn longer then anyone else.
