Definitely play them in order- they aren't like Final Fantasy, they have a definite story arc. Go with either the Duo or Eternal versions of I&II, and if you like them (you'll either love or hate, I love) you'll know if you want to continue. They are extremely linear games with very simple gameplay. On the other hand, I&II are not a massive timesink (I played through I completely in a few hours) and that is a good thing - the story is good but terse and functional, think of it as similar myth or fable as opposed to a long, drawn out rpg being analogous to a novel. And they have the best soundtrack ever and great voice acting. (especially the Duo version). III sucks though, and I haven't played VI at all yet.
