There will be when directors stop treating it like some campy horror flick.
There is no hope for the genre.

I think the issue is more that we've seen so many horror movies with unstoppable killing machines and high body counts that we can't relate with them in any way. When Michael Myers goes after a screaming girl with a machete 45 minutes into the movie you know she has no hope and that he can't be stopped. That feeling of inevitability sucks all the scariness out of the scene. Truly scary movies show us characters that we care about, either due to strong character development or because we relate to them, and then put them in situations where something horrific might happen to them. If it's a foregone conclusion that they're going to get killed then we're already preparing ourselves for the inevitable; scariness is all about catching you off guard.
One thing I have to shoot against Zombie centers on how Jamie's friends were seen as nothing but a couple of sluts. Not that it's wrong seeing hot teenage chicks getting some on camera, but compared to the original they really didn't present anything worth giving a shit over when they died.

Saw it again last night. Just as good the second time.
It's such a different movie than the original…Michael slowly, slowly stalked his victims in the original, but in Zombie's version he's a fucking locomotive that can't be stopped. The pace is non-stop. If anything, it's almost too fast, as Michael suddenly seems to be everywhere at once. Still, it's a minor, minor complaint. I'd rather have relentless pacing then boring pacing.
I'm not saying Carpenter's version was boring at all, however. It had the luxury of being about to take its time, however, because slasher movies were in their infantsy back then and people hadn't really seen this before. Zombie needed to be different and man, he pulled it off big-time. He added so much to the original, while keeping the basics that needed to be there.
You all know how I’m always bitching about remakes? Well, if they were all THIS good, I wouldn't be bitching about them.
Laurie's friends were sluts in the original as well.

#1 this weekend. Fuck yeah.
I'm not surprised. Everyone's been talking about it. I know Zombie said he's not interested in doing a sequel but I'm sure there will be one, if he's involved or not.The movie's budget was only $20 mil, and its made $26.5 million so far (as of Sunday). Making back your budget and then some in just the opening weekend? Zombie's going to be able to do whatever the fuck he wants with his next movie.Originally Posted by IMDB

That's great news. I was really pulling for Zombie here because I thought the movie was so fucking good.
He's a fucking talented guy. He deserves the success.

Hopefully this also means we'll get more real slasher flicks and less torture porn...
