Golden Axe is never the arcade ver. and neither is Altered beast or Shadow Dancer. At this point I'm giving up hope they'll ever get around to actually porting them.
I picked it up. We all know what the games are about, and they seem to be spot-on. (I've only played Shadow Dancer, Alex Kidd, Altered Beast, Golden Axe III, and Phantasy Star II so far.)
No gnus is good gnus.

"Your soul better belong to Jesus, mmm-mmmmm..... cause your ass belongs to me!"
The arcade version of Altered Beast is included as an unlockable though
Shadow Dancer? Perhaps, but the Genesis game isn't the same as the arcade game. Golden Axe? No fucking way. Golden Axe 3 rules, though. It's one of the best beat-em-ups of that era.
Personally, I'm most interested in the whack-ass vector games. I hope those are included in the PSP port.
Shadow Dancer is better precisely because it's not like the arcade game. That's just my personal taste, but I prefer its style and pace to the original.
What does the arcade GA have better than the Genesis version? Aside from improved visuals, I can't think of much. As I said, it has fewer levels and lacks the duel mode from the Genesis port.
I personally didn't like GA 3. The new characters had no personality and it played way too much like most other beat-'em-ups of the era. The magic effects were also neutered. Still, I'm glad to see the whole series released together.
I agree with Melf on both Golden Axe and Shadow Dancer being better on Genesis.
The extra levels in GA were really short so I don't care much about those but the feel of the gameplay is superior; there's something about the timing. I also really enjoyed the vs. mode in the pre-SF2 fighting game scene.
Shadow Dancer's just a matter of preference as it's a different game completely.
Yeah, when I got Shadow Dancer back in the day I was disappointed it wasn't the arcade game. Then, it clicked... it plays more like a true sequel to the arcade Shinobi! Since there was no true home arcade Shinobi (outside of the PCE) I began to love it.
I need to find that cart and play it again.
Good Compliation. Hell PS 4 is a $100 game. I dig the
interviews and box art covers.
I've owned PS 4 for almost 15 years and I still haven't played it yet. That's got to be a pile of shame record.
