Thread: The Pirates of the Caribbean movies

  1. This will probably be the only movie I go see this summer. I like the series, because they are fun to watch. It reminds me of being a kid again playing with lego pirate ships.
    Go 2 H3LL

  2. I actually did fall asleep towards the end the first time I saw the original. I think I was just tired, though.

  3. I'm not sure how people didn't really like the first movie. I've seen it three times now and each time I enjoy myself a lot. I've never before experienced so many people who thought otherwise but this is TNL, where beloved things come to eat flame. That's not to say I mind (or going to get ornery about it like Jetman), it's just bewildering because I've never seen it before.

I personally love the series. It's so much fun and in a setting I myself find enthralling. I suppose a lot of the success could be attributed to how little expectation I had going in to the movie may have made the movie even more potent, but at the same time I still love it after sitting through it three times over the past three years or so. I love the supernatural elements, I love the swashbuckling, I love how it revolves largely around the characters intertwined with a more epic plot and I love how fun Captain Jack Sparrow is.

I have met one or two people that didn't like it, but overall the response for the original was overwhelming positive. I love the movie, it came out when I was working in a theater and I'd drop by the screen while working all the time just to catch scenes here and there. Went into it thinking it was going to be crappy, too.

I was pretty underwhelmed myself. It was okay, I don't hate it or anything, but I'd have given it a B- at best. The main reason I somewhat resent it is because when it came out, a ton of people were recommending it and hyping it, easily the most I'd ever heard a movie talked up in years... and this was while I was working at a movie store, so that's saying something... And according to practically everyone, Jack Sparrow was Depp's role of a lifetime. So seeing it with those lofty expectations and ending up with a movie that dragged more often than not and had a Depp performance that was several notches below an Ed Wood or a Fear & Loathing was a bit of a killjoy.
    I personally love the series.
Er, you're going to have to wait until the second one is actually out before this can be true. Loving one movie does not equal loving a series.

  6. I wouldnt say it was bad or I hated it, I just found it to be boring. The plot dragged and the characters weren't that great, except for Sparrow of course, but it was so trite and all resolved in that happy Summer movie way. I tried to watch it on DVD but didn't get the hype. Maybe it's just not for me.

I much prefered him Pirates then I did in Ed Wood. Still haven't seen Fear and Loathing, even though I've owned a copy for about two years now (someone left it in a room I moved into). Should probably get around to that one day.

Oh yeah, the great soundtrack definately helped Pirates. I love that theme music.

  9. A (internet) friend of mine had a minor role in Pirates 3, and he said that they worked without a finished script and therefore went majorly overbudget. Also, Orlando Bloom is a dick. Chow Yun Fat is in the movie though, so that can only mean good things, but the early pics released of him don't look that great.

I thought Pirates was somewhat boring, too. It just felt like it had no suspense
