Thread: The Pirates of the Caribbean movies

  1. Depp's the only one who wants to make more anyway, so even if it happens you won't have to worry about stomaching Will and 'Liz. Though, I have to wonder how Jack will work without a straight man (heh, there's the only context in which that term applies to Orlando Bloom ;p ).

  2. I'd be willing to bet money that if they make a 4th movie, Will and Elizabeth aren't going to be in it. They're story is over, the Fountain of Youth is next. It'd be really easy to keep making more pirate movies, just make it a new adventure each time.

  3. Ya, the fourth one wouldn't really have to have Will in it at all. She'd probably be in it at some point, but I doubt she's be a main character. All you need is Sparrow and Barbossa battling for the Black Pearl again, and also each conniving their way into finding the fountain of youth. They could also be forced to contend with Calypso. And if they really wanted to bring back Will, they could have Calypso revive Davey Jones.

When did this happen? I don't remember that...

  6. Sayeth IGN:
    Pirates 4 Buzz
    Plot rumors galore!
    by Stax

June 20, 2007 - With Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End doing good business at the box office, it's no surprise to hear rumors about a potential Pirates 4. Series producer Jerry Bruckheimer has said the series could continue if the filmmakers can come up with a good story. Now there are rumblings online about what some of the plot ideas being kicked around are.

According to a scooper for CinemaBlend.com, Johnny Depp is all but set to reprise his role as Captain Jack Sparrow (for a $35-40 million payday, they claim). Also reportedly expected to return are co-star Geoffrey Rush and director Gore Verbinski, although the latter has made it clear to some that he's done with swashbuckling. Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom are not expected to be back, but that's been assumed for sometime. The site adds that production might not begin until sometime between 2009-2011.

CinemaBlend's scooper claims "the fountain of youth story [introduced at the end of Pirates 3] might not be the only story they might use the next pirate's film. The fountain story could be used in another form to introduce the story for Pirates 4."

They add that, "Some of the brainstorming going around involves some Jules Verne type of scenarios involving some pretty big flying machines, a man who wants to rule more than just the ocean, an encounter with the most famous and dangerous pirate of all, a race to get to a lost world (Hint, Hint) and Jack and his crew going to where no pirate has gone before (No, it's not space but Disney had made animated movie about this place before with Michel J Fox voicing one of the characters)."

Jack Sparrow discovers Atlantis?! Time will tell.
If they're not actually gonna show us the Fountain of Youth story (boooooo), then I'm guessing the next film is set 20 years down the line and (probably Shia LaBeouf as) a grown Little Billy Turner is Jack's new sidekick, and Jack and Barbossa have been using the water of youth to stay the same age.

  7. Here's a thing explaining Davy's curse and the fate of Will and Elizabeth a bit more than the vague bit after the credits:

We learn that if the Captain of the Flying Dutchman pledges his heart to someone, he will be freed from his position on the Dutchman within 10 years. But only if the one who is given the captain's heart remains true to it. The reason Davy Jones hates Calypso so much because the bitch cheated on him during the ten year test, dooming him to be the Captain of the Dutchman forever! In addition, we also learn that because Elizabeth stays true to Will for ten years, the scene after the credits is actually his permanent return home... he is now free.

Ted Rossio (one of the screenwriters) posted about being surprised these scenes didn't make the cut. As he put it, "Without this background information it would be difficult - if not impossible - to decipher the true meaning of the post-credits scene." We'll see them on the DVD of course.

  8. Just saw this for the second time. Surprisingly, it got even better with the second viewing!

I still think Calypso should have been flat-out cut and the mystic black girl should have stayed nothing more than the mystic black girl.

But the action. The cheesy dialogue. The...Sparrowness! Very entertaining stuff.

By the way, did anybody else totally geek out when they used the exact voice sample saying "Dead men tell no tales" as heard in the original ride at Disney World?

  10. I freaked out at Keith Richards. And then again a moment later with the dog.
