Thread: The Pirates of the Caribbean movies

  1. I didn't think he reviewed it either. I checked out his site for the review earlier, but there is still only a preview blurb up there.

  2. im watching it tonight, its COMPLETELY sold out every where in south orange county.

  3. oops I was looking at something else. My bad.

he'll probably give it *** though.

  4. I was pretty disappointed with the first movie. I didn't get a chance to catch it in theatres, so I bought it when it came out on DVD based on people's reaction to it. Johnny Depp gave an awesome performance, but the movie didn't really go anywhere. I expected a grand adventure spanning many different locations. Instead, they kept going back and forth to the same places in the movie.

Despite that, I'm really looking forward to the sequel. It looks to be everything I expected the first movie to be.

  5. I don't know what to think. I liked it, but I really can't compare it to the original yet. I'll have to see it a few more times, but right now I'll say that it's as good as the original, but for different reasons (and it has its own share of problems).

And if you absolutely can't stand cliffhangers then just wait for the third movie to come out before watching this.

  6. Aww man a cliffhanger. Oh well, I'm still looking forward to seeing it. When does the third one come out, winter or next summer?

  7. Next summer. It's going to be a long wait.

Ya I only have one thing to say to people who haven't seen it yet: the ending is straight up Halo 2. Otherwise it was awesome. The action scenes are way over the top in spectacular blockbuster movie fashion, jokes are reused often but altered enough to still be funny, and every time Depp talks you're still mesmerized.

Otherwise if you didn't like the first you won't like this. It's just as long and convoluted plotwise as the first, but I think this one is more exciting throughout. There's really very little downtime between action sequences, and what there is of downtime usually brings laughs.

I really have to credit the special effects work. The bad guys were overall very creatively done, and the best part about them is they all had human eyes, meaning there were guys in blue suits or whatever that provided real eyes. That one little factor makes them seem much more alive, even though almost all the rest of them were CG.

Davy Jones's beard is awesome. The Kraken's huge tentacles scraping along the deck and slapping against the rails in the extreme close-ups looked and sounded real.

So yeah, it was awesome. Just like the first movie though, whenever the camera's not on Jack you're almost just waiting until he's back onscreen. But Bloom gives a better performance, IMO.

PS I wore eyeliner. And I have a new hat.

I thought this movie did a far better job of making everyone else interesting. The scenes without Jack work better here than they did in the first one.

I guess. British Spy and Elizabeth's Dad are still whatevs.

It's getting panned by critics. ""Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest is the worst kind of sequel -- the kind that exists only to give you more-more-more of what you liked the first time around, without ever justifying its own existence."

I guess that's true, but all I really wanted from the sequence was to see more Jack. The movie goes way beyond that, really burying itself in all things pirate-y. Lots of iconic visual references, even a shot from Peter Pan (who probably got that scene from an older pirate source.) The more I let myself relax and enjoy it for what it was, the more I appreciated the pure piratey-ness.
