Well, replacing the drive is about as easy as can be, and replacement drives are fairly cheap on eBay. Regardless if it's Thompson, Phillips, or Samsung, all the official DVD drives are plug and play, but thought they're the cheapest, the Thompson drives are the most prone to failure. There's also ways to modify existing DVD drives to play on your Xbox, the most immediate benefit being that you could put a higher-quality drive than any of the official drives, or depending on how you wanna mod your Xbox out, you could put a burner in it.

I put a $25.00 Thompson drive in my $25.00 busted Xbox and it worked like a charm until I sold it. It's worth a shot, I think.
