Posted this on IC, but I'll repost it here:

The ads aren't meant to be full blown racist. They're meant to imply racism while still having plausible deniability, giving Sony an easy out while still allowing for plenty of controversy, which has been a cornerstone of their PSP marketing campaign up to this point.

It doesn't have racist intent, nor is it an unfortunate coincidence. It's meant to appear as though it could be racist, and the fact that every gaming board I've been to has a thread discussing it means that things are working out perfectly.
