Thread: Batman: The Dark Knight

  1. I watched DK again last night for the second time. The flaws are amplified on repeat viewings, and by watching on the tv. I wasn't crazy about the movie in the first place, but I'm not a hater. It's still good. The hate is a reaction to the hype, but the movie truly doesn't deserve either.

I agree the Joker switched the addresses of Dent and Dawes now, but it is not made clear enough to be evident if you're not looking out for it. You have to piece together a couple things they say which aren't that clear, and the characters are off screen. (I still think the movie works better the way I originally interpreted it, with Bruce having to choose between Wayne/Dawes and the Batman/Gotham aspects of his self, and choosing Batman/Gotham. It would have been a strong thematic statement instead of a goofy ill-explained Joker trick.)

Bale actually pulls off the Batman voice in a couple scenes, but particularly near the end it gets really bad. He starts moving his mouth too much and the voice gets crazy over done. (I thought the voice was passable in Begins)

I reinforced my belief that the Two Face story line should have ended at his origin as a way to hack 30+ minutes off the run time, and make the movie more straight forward. He'd have been a great villain for #3, and his death here is anti-climactic. The movie ended when Joker was caught. I didn't care about anything after that.

Nolan left behind all the cool Gotham ambiance he created in the first and turned it into a plain boring city. Gotham was neat in the Begins, with the train, the architecture, and the narrows. It still had some comic book feel without being over the top. Even though this is supposed to be "real" it hurt the movie. Gotham is as much a character of the story as Batman himself, and that was lost.

I didn't like the new Batsuit. A skinny necked Batman isn't all that intimidating.

I watched Batman Returns last night. Its 50x the movie that Dark Knight is, when its campy its supposed to be, and Keaton's Batman voice isn't all SWEAR2ME stupid.

I just don't understand the love for this movie, and especially this Joker. Ledger's performance was good... sure. But its not Oscar worthy... not even a pity Oscar.
Are you afraid you'll hurt Ledger's feelings or something by saying it was just average performance? He's dead... its ok.

What do you mean switched? He never actually told Batman or anyone else where they were 'officially' - he just lied about it when he told them. Or did I miss something?

And I wasn't under the impression Two Face was dead. The press conference was so no one knew that he was a psycho. There was no funeral.
    "Hah, Greg, you're terrible!"

I'll have to re-watch Batman (Original) but I think it's more of a comparison when it comes to the opinion on Joker. This Joker was just so dark, and bat shit insane that it made Jack's pale. Surely he made a better, smarter nemesis in this.

DK shits all over Batman Returns. It's not even close.

I don't care about dead-guy Oscars and all that shit. DK is a much better film. I liked Keaton as Batman, probably even better than Bale, but everything else is just more realistic and I'm tired of "campy" always being tied to super hero movies.

  6. I think you're forgetting that the central characters are dressed in rubber pervert suits.

A little bit of camp is all that's saving this shit from itself.

In all fairness... you have to accept superheros as what they are. And what they are is camp. Batman is awesome... but he is still a man in tights fighting crime because he has daddy issues. There is NO WAY to legitimize that. No matter how much the Batmobile looks like a Go-Bot.

    p.s. SWEAR2ME!
