Thread: Talladega Nights

  1. Talladega Nights

Can't believe no one made a thread for this.

Got back from the 9:15 showing and it was packed. It was really funny but it definitely stands under Anchorman. The comedic pacing felt off at times. You'd get consistant chuckles, then a few bombs in a row, then it would get funny and then a great gag will drop, followed by some more bombs. Best way to describe it I guess is just rapid fire jokes, if something didn't make you laugh (and even if it did) they would just plow ahead and try 3 more in rapid succession. That said, there are more than a few great one liners.

The cast kicked all sorts of ass though, Ferrell and Reilly had great chemistry (Borat was fucking great too). The story overall was a good one, as predictable as it was. The whole cast really sold the movie though. Direction was solid, as usual for Adam Mckay and there was a suprising amount of effects in this one.

If you don't like Will Ferrell you won't like it, but fans definitely will. It has the same comedic vibe as Anchorman, but I think Anchorman had far more hits than misses compared to this.

    yes.

  5. I thought this movie was funny as hell. Anchorman is still my favorite Will Farrell movie.

  6. Definitely enjoyed the movie too! Wasn't expecting too much going in, so was pleasantly surprised. Amy Adams is a super cutie in it too!

I said the same thing (Anchorman still owns) after watching Talladega. I was on a Ferrell kick so I watched Anchorman the next day and I think I have to side with Talladega. It didn't seem so much about rapid fire jokes and actually had more of a movie surrounding it than Anchorman did. They also didn't use the typical in-cast of Vince Vaughn, Stiller, SNL alumni.

My favorite joke of the night was easily Ricky Bobby's first interview where he didn't know what to do with his hands and kept whisper talking in to the mic.

I didn't even realize it was Borat from the commercials. I didn't recognize him.

I prefer Talladega. Ron Burgundy and Brick Tamlen were probably the best things in Anchorman. Chris Parnell has the biggest laugh out of anybody in Anchorman with his reaction to Ron saying the word fuck on the air. ("P..POOP!") Both movies are fun though.

  8. Anchorman is just a collection of random skits cobbled into a movie. It's a mess, but a funny mess.

Talladega is a better movie by every measure. The plot holds together better, and the satire is a lot sharper. The individual performances are a lot stronger as well. Ferrell, Sasha Baron Cohen, Gary Cole, that woman from 40-Year-Old Virgin who plays Ricky's mother, John C. Reilly, even Michael Clarke Duncan turns in a great comedic performance.

The product placement is irritating, but that's NASCAR for you I guess. And Amy Adams > Leslie Bibb, especially after that monologue near the end. Hot.

A movie about NASCAR would actually be really dumb without product placement. It's the only setting I can think of that I can really say that about. But then again I never get pissed off about product placement in movies in the first place.

    No doubt about it.
