I like the part when the Japanese guy is talking to Frank in the elevator. He says something in Japanese so it has subtitles, then it cuts to Frank trying to read the subtitles below his face. Hilarious.

Monday was my girlfriend's (and her twin's) birthday, and they wanted to see Crank, mostly because they think Statham was hot. Ha ha ha. Little did they know that they were walking into MY kind of movie.

They didn't really care for it too much. I thought it was fucking awesome.

  4. This movie was completely useless. It was dumb, blatantly and continually racist, infused with non-stop cuts and intentional "shaky-cam", and handled with all the subtlety of a Slim-Jim advertisement. The shaky-cam was seriously like 80% of the movie, and made my head hurt.

I was completely prepared to buy into the premise, too, so it's not like I went in there and got the bait-and-switch. Not only was it pretty obnoxious on its own, but the director thought it would be cool to use all these unorthodox techniques, reminiscent of another shitty movie, Van Damme's Knock Off. Odd text on the screen, mutliple viewing angles at once, different shots superimposed on the scenery of the current shot...and none of it succeeded or was in any way necessary.

Also frustrating was the lack of any good fight scenes. -and the fights that existed were devoid of any martial art prowess, which seems like a big wasted opportunity considering Statham is one of the few white guys on-screen that does anything competently. The whole movie seems like a lot of wasted opportunity, the more I think about it...and that's only if you were already prepared to buy the silly plot.

edit: Even the smattering of bare breasts was a waste, as they were generally thrown in there like, "Oops! There's some more -oh no we didn't!". This Amy Smart gal, who was supposed to be all that (and I admit she's really cute), was pretty much wasted since her character is practically mentally retarded, she's raped during her big scene, and there's nothing cool about raping retards.

The credits treatment was funny, but that's like getting a free mint after a barfy meal.

My brother made that exact quote coming out of it, and predicts that the movie will probably end up being popular.

Maybe you took the movie a little too seriously.

  6. Nah, like I said, I wanted to like it based on the premise and from what I've seen in Statham's other performances. Just didn't really like the way they handled, well, just about anything.

I guess it was different, if nothing else. Some feared it would just be "Speed" with a dude instead of a bus, but I never really got that feeling.

IMO, this is the best movie I've seen him in. Transporter 1 sucked for me, I couldn't stand it at all. Never watched 2 because of it. He's one of those hit or miss actors.

What was racist about it? Also, this is the one and only movie that "shaky cam" actually enhances it. I loved the random subtitles and they even broke the fourth wall a couple of times. I do think you took it too seriously, and the action scenes while not all that, served the movie's purpose. I don't think it was supposed to be like a kung-fu fest or anything. His girlfriend didn't get raped, she was reluctant at first but eventually did agree to the sex and enjoyed it IMO. She was pretty dumb.

You should watch Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels.

Good. I'm tired of people doing spinning jumping kicks and other stupid shit in movies that aren't specifically kung fu movies. People don't actually fight like that and it's played out (unless it's Tony Jaa).
