Thread: So We are down to 8 Planets...

  1. Weekly World News most likely.

    Or Teen People

  2. I like the idea that there are Planets, proper-like, and then there are others. 8 Planets makes sence to me, the others are sub-classes, like Dwarves and Irregulars as well as well known Asteroids, Comets and Moons.

The definition of Planet will always be considered arbitrary because really the general concept of planet is somewhat arbitrary. For the sake of communicating ideas, it's important to pidgeon-hole these objects into categories that explain very distinctly what they are. With the asteroids and the dwarves the idea of planet is too vauge. Planet should mean what people tend to think it means, things like Mars or Earth or even Saturn. Oddball objects like Pluto/Charon should be defined diffrently.

You read wrong. These are not new discoveries, just a change in classification. For example, Ceres has in the past been considered a planet, then like Pluto, had its designation revoked.

  5. What if these different dwarve planets have life on them? Would that change their classification? Say Ceres has some kind of ice animals, then would it change it's classification to planet because it supports life?

Did you read above what now defines a planet?
