Very soon, Xbox Live Gold members will be able to download the Phantasy Star Universe beta. Earlier today, Sega announced that the open beta would begin tomorrow, be available to download for until Thursday, and be playable until next Wednesday (October 18). However, that has since been changed to "very soon" with a note from a site admin that the beta will be available "in the coming days."

Sega "highly recommends" that players who join the beta tinker with the plethora of customization options. Not only do they promise fun, but it also helps them work out the kinks ahead of time. Featured in the beta will be three planets (Parum, Neudaiz, and Moatoob), three classes (Hunter, Ranger, and Force), and an unfurnished personal space aptly dubbed "My Room."

We'll let you know when the official date is finalized. Phantasy Star Universe for Xbox 360 will land on store shelves October 24 (meaning any bugs you find will likely require a day-of-purchase online update).

Rumor: Gears of War Demo in Two Days?

Gears of War just got all viral on us. People who subscribed to the game's official site received an email this morning with a cryptic message and even more cryptic link.

The message seems to be a bit of coalition propaganda, but a dozen of the words in the paragraph are hyperlinks to the same page. The links all point to a sub-page of the Gears of War site called 48HrsExclusiveAccess. The page first shows a little black and white security video of Marcus Fenix in a prison cell and then goes black. You're give three matches to light and explore a wall on the page. If you click on any of the four messages you find there you get to see four different videos showing backstory and some gameplay.

More interesting is the fact that the dozen words that are hyperlinks in the email form the sentence: Marcus Fenix has been located. You have 48 hours to mobilize.
The question is what does that mean. It could mean that the linked page is only around for 48 hours or, let's hold our breath, that we will be perhaps getting a demo of Gears of War in two days.

you're right... unless they store the character data server side this time, which i don't remember if we've been given a clear answer on that. i hope they do because it cuts down on cheating and at least slightly justifies the monthly fee.

PSU is 6 player now too, isn't it?

Storing the character server side doesn't justify a ridiculous $10 a month fee unless you're StriderKyo, in which case paying $10 a month for something other games do for free is perfectly acceptable because what are you, poor? lol

That's what I'm saying. I pay WoW whatever I do because at any given time my server stored character can interact with thousands of people, all but 8ish hours every week. Same with EQ, etc. Guild Wars has a happy little medium, and should really be the comparison since IIRC there is no Monthly Fee.
