Thread: Official PlayStation 3 Thread

  1. Apparently a PS3 arrived at one of my friends' doorstep today. He ordered it from Play-Asia for $1075 (including shipping). He invited me over to play some Resistance, but I had to decline. I'll check it out this weekend, though.

Is it 30fps, I heard somewhere that they downgraded it?

I got a 360, can't see Resistance on that platform though.

A smiley wouldn't have changed shit, I'm tired of of having GoW in every fucking topic when it's not related. And while this thread has a lot trolling in it most of the people just come to gloat at facts and not spew bullshit.
Thanks for trying your best to keep up with the low standards btw.

  3. Quick Impressions:

    - System is practically tied with the Xbox1 in terms of overall weight.
    - Extremely shiny (as you already know); seems a feather duster will be the safest thing to use for cleaning the system.
    - Dashboard has adopted a similar interface like the PSP. Clean and easy to navigate. Has tons of various settings that I'll probably never use though (at least not yet). Honorable mentions: Installing an OS (allows you to partition the drive); enter terms (add to internal dictionary), various BlueRay and other multimedia settings galore (good news for video junkies)
    - PlayStation Network still seems to be "unavailable"... or at least open solely to persons in Japan. I attempted to go through with registration, but the dropdown menu only offers Japan as an option for language type/region. NOTE: Once you enter this information along with your d.o.b., you're unable to change it later on. Would've went through with it , but I got stumped with the Japanese text for "Choose a security question?".
    - Browsing is decent, but there aren't enough view options that allow you to customize it according to your screen size. The standard setting requires that you use the Sixaxis to scroll up/down/left/right to view the entire webpage, while the other option merely zooms all the way out and is too small to appreciate anything at all. Firefox should be on this baby. In short: PS3 internal browser sux!

I wish the network was "officially" up for U.S. residents -- currently, the only option available for registration is listed in Japanese. I'm looking forward to trying out what the PSN offers first hand. Currently there are free demos of Resistance: Fall of Man, NBA 06 and Ridge Racer 6. There's also some original games on there too which could serve as the PS3 equivalent of what we've been getting on XBLA. More to come.

The Sixaxis is SUPER light compared to any previous PlayStation controller on the market. People who've become accustomed to the rumble feature will be SOL here because there it doesn't exist in the wireless controllers. Note: The manual reports too that the PS3 can support up to 7 wireless connections. To quit a game, power down the control etc. works in similar fashion as the 360 by simply holding the PS icon down for 2 seconds.

Contents: Standard AV cable, PS3 unit, mini-USB cable (used for charging Sixaxis), a copy of The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (for first 500,000 units), 1 Sixaxis controller, power cable. Those of you with HDTVs are going to have to fork over some cash for an AV cable w/component or HDMI; both of which are sold seperately and should have been included in the box.

Games: Played Genji briefly; decent game, but I was never all that awestruck by the PS2 equivalent. NBA 06 is definitely rich in graphics and serves as a nice launch title for the system, but it's not taking the crown away from the NBA 2K series. Didn't get around to playing Resistance: Fall of Man, but based upon the impressions I've gathered, this will ultimately be the game that keeps my interest until the third-party publishers roll out their goods.

Backward compatibility: We already know over 200 titles don't work... saw little point in jumping into my collection to figure out what's playable (or at the very least, would actually offer me sound). Will look into this tomorrow or so.

This is the most inexcusable shit ever. Didn't Sony say some ridiculous nonsense about the hi-def era not starting until they say so? And yet for $600 they can't include some $5 component cables that are REQUIRED for hi-def?

  5. Am I the only one who doesn't really care that rumble is gone? I played Motorstorm on the demo unit today and it wasn't until I read this thread that I remembered there was no rumble.

  6. No, rumble is gay. Good riddance.

What else would we do, say "Wow, Sony just made another great decision, I love their launch games, and everything they have planned for the system seems great!"?

But the controller only has four lights that tell which player you are. Do the extra 3 wireless connections mean anything for multiplayer or are they just reserved for extra wireless peripherals?

  9. I think they just included it as a nice-sounding thing to mention in bullet-pointed lists and slideshows. I can't imagine a game where 7 people would share one screen without it being a giant clusterfuck.

I'll swing by during lunch, since I work right down the road. I'm tempted to wear a blue polo shirt and announce to the line that the PS3 shipment was cancelled and watch the subsequent mayhem.
