The SNES was released two years after the Genesis. Maybe it would be a terrible decision, but as you say I don't work for Sony and we'll never know.

And if you think the videogame market back when SNES was released is even remotely similar to what it is now you're a fool.

Well, moving it back to a real launch in March 2007 would have the following advantages:

    -proper supply
-more polished games (online with tony hawk etc.)
    -more reliable hardware
    -larger list of blu-ray
    -lower price

    Pretty significant.

The advantage of pushing some shit onto the shelf now is to blunt the creeping acceptance of 360, but if the launch ends up being the shitstorm we all think it is going to be that just might drive more people to M$ (ROFL). Making a huge awesome launch, 5 million units, $400/$500, 50 games, in March could be a BIG DEAL and we all know they're gonna do a "relaunch" in March anyway (similar to what MS did).

I dunno. I think a case can be made for both sides. It's a tough decision and I'm not paid to make it thankfully.

I thought the early launch of 360 hurt M$ early on but right now it looks like pure genius in forcing Sony's hand.

What is this, bizzaro world? Sega got a huge jumpstart and pretty much tied Nintendo after getting it's ass kicked by the nes unless I'm horribly misstaken.

Sony will lose some customers by delaying the launch in europe, but it won't matter that much since MS seems to have problems grasping this market.

isn't the 360 doing well in europe?

  7. The Genesis only flew off the shelves the moment that the SNES hit the stores. Many people waited and waited until it's launch, then bought the Genesis.

I bet there are millions of people waiting for the PS3's launch to make a decision on what console(s) to buy. I suspect that a weak PS3 launch will result in huge 360 sales starting on launch day.

Apparently Sony's stock dropped big time since the TGS and that chances are slim that the PS3 will be out when it is supposed to. Nothing is on their website yet, and I don't think any of this is coming straight from Sony. It seems to be stemming from the overheating PS3(s) that appeared at TGS.

Sony shares dropped 2.75 percent today in the wake of reports that PlayStation 3 units had to be frequently reset at the 2006 Tokyo Game Show; Sony says problems caused by high temperatures at venue.
A report from Macquarie Equities analyst David Gibson helped spur investor concern over Sony’s next generation machine.

"While the reason for [the PS3’s technical difficulties] is unknown, we suspect it may be due to overheating as a result of enclosing the units and the high temperatures at the [TGS] venue," Gibson wrote in a report. "We are concerned that such a problem has occurred so close to full production and is clearly negative news for the company."

Shares for Sony dropped 130 yen ($1.11) on Tuesday on the Tokyo Stock Exchange following the report.

Sony spokesperson Nanako Kato clarified the company's position on the matter to the Associated Press, saying that the 200 PS3s at TGS were grouped closely together in poorly ventilated in kiosks causing overheating issues and subsequent failures.

Kato said, “It's not a problem with the PlayStation 3 unit itself. For a normal player at home, there shouldn't be any problem."

SCEA hadn’t replied to Next-Gen’s inquiries on the matter as of press time.

Didn't we predict this issue when we saw the design?
