Why do people keep saying this? He knew crocodiles and alligators like the back of his hand. He even let his baby run around in the presence of a crocodile. A crocodile or alligator would be the last thing I would expect Steve Irwin to be killed by.

Not likely. Part of having knowledge about wild animals is the realization that no situation ever is in 100% control Random acts can always happen and animals can behave in unexplainable ways. From my understanding he was hurt many many times from crocs and alligators and snakes, and more than would have likely died without the knowledge he has as well at the excellent proffesionals he worked with. Getting killed by a stingray is a random act equivolent to a car accident or getting hit by lightning. Nobody saw it coming.

That's what I'm saying. His extensive knowledge with crocodiles and alligators allowed him to assess whatever situations he had with them. Even in those situations where one did get unpredictable on him, he knew how to handle it. It never crossed my mind that his death would come at the hands of an alligator or crocodile. Which is why I find it baffling when I hear people say, "Oh, it was a stingray. I figure it'd be a crocodile."

  6. What I am saying though Nash is that Steve was injured many many times and lots of those times could have been fatal but for chance and the people around him to save him. Skill and knowledge allowed him to not get injured every time he was near an animal, but it is luck that when he was injured it was not fatal.

True, but their tigers are supposed to be trained and docile, in addition to being in a "controlled environment," a situation which Siegfried and Roy were experts at. That just goes with the whole "animals being unpredictable" arguement. I think you could equate that to Steve Irwin facing crocs (and who knows what else) in the wild.

  8. Plus they've owned tigers for like 20 years. They knew tigers as much as Irwin know crocs. People are suprised because statistically, he was gonna be taken down by a croc or alligator over any other animal.

Especially a damn sting ray. Apparently he's the 18th person in recorded history to be killed by a sting ray. It's more dangerous to cross the street.
