Thread: Steve Irwin Dies Exactly Like You'd Expect

  1. I've always wanted to know how the barb mechinism works.

can the Stingray control which direction the barb points out or something?

  2. No, the stinger only goes in one way. Easy in, hell going out. Like this:

    <-<-<-<-<-

The < are the barbs. Now imagine this | is skin. So when it goes in it's like this:

<-<-|-<-<-< Pulling it out would be going to the right in this case.

Imagine pulling that out. The barbs keep the stinger in, when you pull it out it does a shit load of damage because the barbs are now sticking out in the direction you're pulling. Porcupine quills are like that too.

  3. Rumpy, I understand that, and yea dude trying to take that shit out would be a world of pain.

But can the stingray control the spike, as a whole? Or can the barb/stinger only stick up?

his line of work? dude, he was a wildlife conservationist, are you expecting al gore to snuff it next? He did all this over the top stuff to educate people, he put on the show and was way over the top to get people to watch, then he let you know that "hey you know that cool animal i showed? its endangered, so is its habitat, you may want to do something about that". as for the kid thing, it was one croc, an animal that he had worked with for over 30 years, he knew their mannerisms and postures so well that the kid was less in danger than getting in a car with a carseat.

Yea, what was funny was that people who didnt know jack shit about crocodiles at all trying to say that they knew better than he that the kid was in danger.

The stunt was poorly conceived but not dangerous.

Considering the stingrays arent really dangerous I think the fact that the barb hit him in the best was just a freak occurrence. If it hit him in the leg or stomach or anywhere else on his body he would still be alive.

It's attached to the end of it's tail, and it sort of 'whips' or lashes it at whatever it wants to hit, be that above it (as Steve was) or in front of it (this only applies to some Stingray species, who obviously have longer 'tails').

    Long tail:

oh shit, all this time I thought the stinger was underneath the stingray's tail. That's scary as shit. Thanks.

    btw

BRISBANE, Australia (CNN) -- "Crocodile Hunter" Steve Irwin, the Australian naturalist killed by a stingray on Monday, was filmed removing a poisonous barb from his chest just before he died, according to news reports.

is it like a scorpion stance, where the tail is bent over the scorpion/stingray? i'd love to see a pic of that.

Some species to have the stinger underneath their tails, but these mofo's are pure gangster.

Well, it'd be a similar motion to a scorpion sting, but it's not like it sits there and lines you up, looking all menacing. From what I've read, they're really fucking fast, so they go from 'normal-looking-stingray-with-it's-tail-trailing-behind-it' to 'GET-OVER-HERE' and back again in one quick movement.

It should be stated that I only know this because I've been reading up on stingray since this happened - prior to yesterday I didn't even know they could hurt you.

(edit: There has to be a photoshopped Scorpion vs Steve pic somewhere already, hasn't there?)
