No, Variety is fine...my worry is that people will take Nintendo's lead on this and turn gaming into what arcades are full of: stupid gimmicky garbage.
Nintendo's. They fucked up royally last gen.
Well, that's why two other systems exist that offer what you want. Variety in a market is a good thing.I am not saying this isn't a good business move, it's just a bad step for gaming in most of our (TNL's) eyes. Most of us aren't clamoring for a new control scheme in lieu of power or features because we aren't tired of the way games are presented (in the area of control).
Crossfire was cheap as hell and the Power Glove was a gimmick that didn't really tie into anything. On the other hand, everything about the Wii revolves around the remote. The implementation is a hell of a lot stronger, and the basic idea is far more sound than the Power Glove, even if third parties aren't quite sure what to do with it yet beyond finally making a decent console FPS control scheme. I'm not saying it'll work out, but the Power Glove isn't really a good comparison. But I don't have high hopes for the controller. Most of those gimmicky things you wanted when you were a kid? (like the Crossfire board game or the Power Glove or the U-Force or...) ...total crap because they are half assed and 6 year olds don't have discerning taste. How is this going to be much different?

I've said this in other threads--the only games that are worth downloading on the VC are the good light-gun games and any game that allows you to play with another person via Connect24. Since the latter only exists in my imagination, it looks like the only games I'll be downloading are Battle Clash and Metal Combat: Falcon's Revenge. It would be cool if Nintendo convinces Sega to release Virtua Cop on the VC, but I wonder if that game would be too big for the service.
I would download Sin & Punishment as well, but since offering that would actually be a good idea, Nintendo isn't going to do it.
R.I.P. Paragon Studios
You're worried about people taking Nintendo's lead? That's a bit like worrying EA will stop making football games. The only way anybody takes Nintendo's lead here is if the thing actually takes off and really is a far better control method, because there's no way they're affecting trends with good will and a respectable name these days.
I can see going over to someones house that has a Wii, the small system sitting on the shelf and the 14 necessary accesories littered all over the damn floor.
"Want to play the new driving game for it? Here's the remote and...shit what did I do with that clip on steering wheel?"
I don't see how anybody can hate on a console they haven't played yet.
God forbid a little evolution.
Sheep.
