Thread: The Nintendo Wii international press conferences thread

  1. It's odd that people will find every way possible to justify a ridiculously high price to themselves while at the same time rightfully loling at the PS3. It's the cheapest system this generation, but it's just as much of a ripoff as the PS3 when it comes to the price/technology ratio. As for price/quality, that will be determined when any one of us actually plays the fucking thing. That argument doesn't fly right now, and the assumption seems strange to me since a majority of Nintendo's Gamecube lineup was pretty disappointing.

Yeah, but two of the ones that weren't disappointing were my no. 1 and 2 games of the generation by a large margin.

If RE Wii is what reports are saying, it's already got a high spot in my top games of next gen locked up. Metroid Prime 3 could as well. Zelda may very well deliver on it's vaunted claim of "best Zelda ever". Mario Galaxy looks amazing. Smash Bros will be a blast. That's at least 5 potential killer apps for me just in the first year or so... that's a far cry better than most systems. They may have more games that interest me numbers-wise, but I'd rather have 2 or 3 AAA games than 20 B games. Personally (and I'm sure this applies to many here), It's not like I'm a loss for other unfinished games on other systems to occupy my time in between those games.

I am going to ignore software entirely for a minute and analyze the statement you just made.

Microsoft set the bar for current gen pricing at the following:

    Console $300
    20 GB HDD $100
    WiFi Adapter $100
    Wireless Controller $50
    HD-DVD Drive $200
    Game $60

Obviously if you buy the Premium bundle, you save $20 on the headset. I'm calling that negligible for this discussion.

Sony then came along and had two PS3 packages that break down roughly as follows (all of this ignores that the PS3 has more HP than the 360):

    Console w/ 20 GB HDD and Blu-Ray Drive $500
(By Microsoft's pricing, that makes the console $200)
    or
Console w/ 60 GB HDD, Blu-Ray Drive, WiFi, HDMI, and flash card support $600
(By Microsoft's pricing, that makes the console $100 and 40GB of storage, HDMI, and flash card support free)
    Wireless Controller $50 (estimate)
Game $60 (based on Activision's statement)

Now we come to Nintendo. For a system significantly more powerful than an Xbox but signifcantly less powerful than a 360...

Console w/ WiFi, flash card support, and a game $250
(By Microsoft pricing, this makes the console $90 with free flash card support)
    Wiimote $40
    Nunchuk $20

So you pay $10 more for motion sensing technology. You get something tangible for that additional cost.

Using this logic, the Wii is less than a GameCube feature-for-feature, and you get the new controller and flash card support tossed in.

  5. So if you could buy a Kia Rio for $40,000 or a Mercedes S600 for $80,000, most of you would choose the Rio because "the price is decent compared to the competition"? Absolutely insane.

I have yet to see anything on Wii that looks better than an Xbox game.

Then blame that on the developers. The hardware is significantly more powerful.

When the Xbox 360 or Wii become something more important than what they are. Videogame consoles that will be obsolete in 5 years, then this argument will be valid.

No shit. The only game that has been shown running fully on Wii hardware has been SMG.

Your whole argument is horse shit, you know as well as everyone else why the Xbox 1 is still $150. Its probably costing them about the same to make as it did in 2001. If they had more control over things it'd likely be $100.

I'll believe it when I see the games. If you wanna play pretend hardware engineer there's plenty to talk to at GAF.

edit: from what I have seen on sites and Wiki, Nintendo has been very vague on the amount of memory, mhz of cpu, class of gpu, etc.

  9. I'll sell you this Big Mac for $10. The price is reasonable because a Filet Mignon costs $18.

Can you repeat that in English, please?

Even if that's true SMG doesn't look any better than an Xbox game either.

Car != videogame system. And I wouldn't buy a Mercedes S600 because I can't afford it and would rather spend some of that money on other things.

    Videogame consoles also != food.

And to cut it off at the pass, they are also not houses or clothes.
