Yeah, this is has been around a while (well, maybe not this kid in particular). One blind guy taught a whole class of blind people to do it, and they were out riding their bikes in the parks and streets, and he was describing a physical "scene" about 20 yards away from him with decent accuracy. I saw it on the Discovery channel or something a couple years ago.

20/20 did a story on him about a month ago. On that, folks complained about him not using a cane to let others know that he's blind, and the accuracy of echolocation was brought up.

Sometimes it's nice to know that the guy crossing the street can't see you coming. I mean, it's his life and all and he seems to be getting around all right without one but if he gets run over I don't want to see any lawsuits.

Apparently this isn't too uncommon, as there are clickers they give people to do the same thing with, this guy just uses natural echolation instead of a clicker to help him do it. I did not know that.
