Riiight, misstakes aside, I don't se how those two are good examples of change?

Because before the Xbox 1 launched, most western made console games were LOL-worthy outside of a very select handful of developers (Psygnosis, Rare, umm). The Halo trailers show that as much thought and hype is put into western made games as are movies. Halo 2 generated more revenue in one day than the release of any other entertainment media (movies, cd's, etc), ever. Now Sony has shifted their development from Japan to western devs. God of War 1&2, Ratchet & Clank, Resistance, Jak & Daxter, Naughty Dog's new game, Warhawk, Lair, etc. Even Nintendo gave one of their biggest franchises to some no-name developer in Texas.

The reason I cited Lost Planet is Capcom has said lately how they're attempting to make their games more western to generate more sales.

  3. Nintendo gave Metroid to a Western developer because Japan doesn't give a shit about that franchise.

  4. Well the biggest thing that changed is I stopped giving a shit about niche japanese games. I never cared much for Jrpgs but I was all over platformers and shooters for a long time. Now I'm shifting steadily toward western genres and styles. A good example of this is I just got chibi robo and I played it for about an hour and was totaly bored out of my fucking skull. But back in 2001 I would have been all over it, for whatever reason I loved stupid boring games like this and I don't even want to think about how many hours of my life I wasted on harvest moon.

All I really thought about when playing chibi robo was how much I wanted to pick up mech assualt 2. My lust for shooters is dead as well, the games just blend in to me now. Haven't had any desire to boot one up in forever, the last time I did play one I was just bored. I still enjoy a good platformer but I don't have the same interest I did before. However the one japanese genre I love more than ever is the 2-D fighter. For a while there I was on a huge fighter kick. But yeah I could give a shit about the crap japan is pushing out there doors aside from those, It's all about the west now a days. One thing that never changed is the retarded amount of star wars games I buy, I doubt that ever will change too.

But isn't a big reason for that that many western devs have begun moving from computer games or doing both? It's not like there was a shortage of good and popular pc games during the 90's.

One could only hope that they were not aiming at the japanese market since it is non existant for that platform

I don't know but you are talking about played out genres but I don't see eastern devs(and I don't know why western has to include europe, make it east, west and central or some shit) being alone in putting out the same old shit to some extent.

  6. My tastes haven't changed but my favorites probably have, since I think games get better in a lot of ways as technology progresses. Also not though--I think 2D games are in general a lot more fun to go back to.

  7. 2001- Anything from the arcade and Dreamcast was mine. I was also a terrible pirate that stole games because I was poor. Played lots of fighting games, esp. Soul Caliber and 2D Capcom stuff. Also big into any PC FPS I could get my hands on. Unreal Tournament, Shogo , KingPin , Soldier of Fortune, etc. Loved playing hockey with no rules.

2006- I no longer pirate games since I would rather support my favorite companys. Still big into FPS's . Prefer FPS's that really concentrate on team-work. I buy far fewer games than I did before, since I don't have as much time to play. I still play single player games, but they have to be really good. Okami and Shadow of the Collossus are the last 2 single player games I bought. Still love hockey(2K7 owns my soul) but now I play with rules

I haven't changed all that much, really. My biggest thing is that I don't pirate and I don't try to get every game that comes out.

  8. I would say the main difference is I buy and play fewer games now.

  9. 2001 - Bought oodles of DC games, played lots of fighting games, and played PSO like a fiend. Played lots of JRPGs, and Card Fighters Clash on the NGPC.

2006 - Rent 90% of my games, play JRPGs, don't play fighters at all anymore. Play/interested in niche games like Rez, Lumines, Okami. Play lots of portable games on the DS and PSP. Play lots of online Mario Kart and Tetris.
You don't have to be smart; you don't have to know the facts, you just have to be confident.

In 2001 I had a DC, and played a lot of crap for it. PSO, Garou, KoF, Crazy Taxi, JGR, and so on. I think I started getting into LAN PC games at that time, too, so a lot of Quake 3, UT, and I think Action Half-Life.

As reasonable as a lot of that is, there was still some serious fronting. I played a bunch of JRPGs without finishing them, even though I didn't like the genre all that much. I probably tried to play Radiant Silvergun at this point in time. Also plenty of fighting games with Thief Silver. Nothing wrong with that in and of itself, and there were plenty of fun matches, but I honestly don't feel like I "got" fighting games until pretty recently. Eh, who doesn't think they were dumb when they were younger.

Funny thing is, I'm actually starting to get into some of these games. The RPGs (kinda), the fighting games, and the shooters. I'm even enjoying the non fchan-frontin' stuff more. It's almost like I just suddenly started loving games the past year or two, even though I've been playing them for ages.
