The biggest difference for me is that back then, I was strictly console, but now I'm generally far more interested in PC gaming.
There were a few great 16 and 32- bit jrpgs that remain some of my favorite games to this day, but I think by 2001 (and much wasted money) I finally realized they were the exceptions rather than standard for the genre.
I also used to buy any decent fighting game that came out, only to have them languish upon the shelf while my crew and I played Powerstone or Smash Bros. And honestly, since 3S has pretty much been the only real game in town since then anyway, I've come to appreciate honing skills (mostly by losing to Cowdisease) in one rather than never seeing the depth of many. Online play is also required if I ever buy another fighting game again
Shooters and strat-rpgs are still two of my favorite genres, but I think with shooters it's just gotten a little too pricey- I got most of the sought after Saturn shooters for really cheap back in the day- and not worth the hassle of importing, etc, when I can essentially get the same thing out of Mars Matrix or Batsugen without paying $70+ bucks.
With strat rpgs, replace money with time and the fact nothing has really surpassed Ogre Battle 64 imo. I've gravitated more to the strategic action gameplay found in games like Phantom Dust and Guild Wars.
I play racing games a lot more now, but I still play the same ones I had then.
Overall, I guess I also spend a whole lot less on getting more games, and think through even bargain-bin purchases a lot more carefully. I finally got Dracula X last month, and that will likely be the last "collectible" game I ever get. Even then, after wanting it for years, I hardly played it.
