If I said 'get screwed' it would be just as bad. To clarify: I had a Korean manager who really didn't speak English, made my job miserable, and they wouldn't even give a woman who had been working there for 8 years the extra 1 hour a week to make her qualify for benefits. My hours were very low priority and I was given really, really bad shifts.

Salary jobs are rough. Sure the money's usually good, but it doesn't usually balance out well, because you end up working so many hours that you make less money on an hourly basis.

Yeah, the break thing is a state-by-state thing. I got pissed one time because our work cut back lunchbreaks and eliminated them for shorter shifts. I knew it MUST be against labor laws, so I checked NC state law. Well, there are very few labor laws here, they can work me to death with no break at all.

The hours thing though, it doesn't really matter how long your shift is or how many days it is, but once you go over 40, you should get overtime for any hours above that. I would definately report it. Also take a look at your paycheck and make sure they aren't dicking you on hours also. Most stores payroll systems will automatically pay overtime, but it's easy for a manager to manipulate it so that it shows you with less than 40 hours a week. For example, if you have a two week payperiod, and you worked 45 hours one week but only 35 the next, he might shift 5 hours to the second week so you still get paid for 80 hours, but not the overtime you deserved.

Yup, and this happens all the time (happened to me on several occasions) but workers have no rights in NC. Protip though, call your local office of the justice dept. if your federal rights have been violated in this fashion because it is illegal, but if you call the NC dept of labor you are wasting your time. Either way though, you won't have a job anymore.
To boldly go where lots of men have gone before...

  5. Also if you make the call, don't plan on using your previous employer as a reference. People don't like whistleblowers in any industry.
