Thread: Official Wii Thread: Part 3

  1. I agree the component cable thing is a fiasco and suitably enraging. It really irritates me that Nintendo can be so clueless to their demand.

  2. "I see a system that works referred to as a cheap gimmick and good games referred to as trash, but very little in the way of reasoning as to why. I remain unconcinced as to why I should dislike a system I'm having such a good time with, and endless stupid insults aren't going to be changing my mind any time soon."

You don't have to dislike anything. But I have given you plenty of reasons why I think it's a gimmick or lame. The VC is inferior to XBLA because it lacks any functionality beyond the original game. The fact that Nintendo is PURPOSELY holding the big names back for inevitable "real" game droughts is wack. Granted, the 360 is doing this too, but they have an excuse: the games aren't just roms. Secondly, Nintendo put their flagship game that could have EASILY been done on the Cube on the Wii to spur sales. If you're going to port it to the Wii, make some graphical improvements, please. It's not like they didn't have time to do this. Thirdly, Excite Truck is an abomination. The remote gives you nothing in terms of feedback. It doesn't snap to center like a gamepad or a real wheel, it clearly isn't pushing the Wii, it doesn't have online play (which should have been day freaking one, at least the PS3 could do this). All I see is a mini-game system. Don't get me wrong, mini-games can be fun, but when it dominates your line up, that reeks of quick cash-in. They're easy to develop because you don't have to have a sense of continuity throughout the game or anything. Fourthly, there is NO quality control on the system whatsoever. GT Pro Series and about 6 other games have NO business being on the Wii whatsoever. This is a system that's a) more powerful than the Cube and b) developers know it already. The best advantage to using old hardware is the comfort level for devs right away. We didn't see this; instead, we got stuff that could easily be done on the Cube. Can you think of another time where a new console couldn't even match the previous gen? That's just beyond sad. Even the big hitters coming later can't match the Xbox 1's best.

All of these points clearly point to Nintendo being in it just for the money. Granted, all companies are, but at least they try to hide it. Put it this way...if Infinium DID make a console and it had these problems, you would be laughing. And rightfully so. Nintendo doesn't deserve a pass because you played Mario when you were 4. 3dfx was knocked from their perch when they couldnt keep up. You should demand more. IMHO

No one's trying to convince anyone as to why they shouldn't like the Wii. We're just stating our opinion as to why we don't like it and why we think Nintendo sucks.

As for why I think the system is gimmicky, just read the reviews for any of multi-platform games on the system Marvel Ultimate Alliance, Splinter Cell, etc.). None of them work well with the Wii-mote/nunchuk at all. They're not only afterthoughts, but they're also different for the sake of being different, without being better (they're actually worse). That's certainly a "new" and "different" gaming experience, but it's also a less enjoyable one for me.

Another thing that turns me off about the Wii is that the controller actually limits what you can do with certain games. Take Wii Sports for example. Sure, I can use the Wii-mote as a bat, racket, or whatever, but I can't do anything else in the game. In contrast, I can do so much more in Top Spin with a conventional controller. This actually draws me more into the game than motion-sensor + limited controls. I know Wii Sports is basically a demo of what the system is capable of, and so far, it's telling me that the system is capable of much.

As for the titles you mentioned, Trauma Center, and to an extent, Rayman, are definitely games I'd like to see more of on the Wii. They're specifically developed for the system, and they make creative uses of the controller. But so far, it looks like these type of titles are going to be the exception rather than the norm. I'm not interested in another Nintendo system where my entire library consists of less than five games.

With respect to Twilight Princess, I'm not counting that as a Wii title because it's really a Gamecube title, and I rather play it on the Gamecube. And as for Excitetruck, not only is it not fun, but I don't see the big deal with using the Wii-mote as a steering wheel when I can play better racing games on other systems with a real steering wheel experience. You people act as if Nintendo just invented the steering wheel for video games.

So until I see a lot more games that deliver on Nintendo's promise of a gaming revolution, I'll be playing Splinter Cell on my HDTV (and with better controls).

  5. It'd be nice if the devs would use the classic controller for their ports, instead of slapping on poor controls using the Wiimote.
    No gnus is good gnus.

  6. GT Pro is shit, and I wouldn't touch the Wii version of Splinter Cell if it was given to me free with a full-body happy-ending massage. I'm counting Zelda as a Wii title because that's the system I'm playing it on, much as I thought of Beyond Good & Evil as a Cube title.

I'm not saying the system isn't having its birthing problems. The lack of Opera, news, and weather channels is stupid and the component cable thing is just plain pathetic, caused by a level of arrogant incompetence to rival anything Sony's shown lately. But, and this is the most important thing, I have three games that are a ton of fun (yes, that includes Excite Truck. Deal with it.) with more on the way. I hope like hell Super Swing Golf is as good as the Wii Sports Golf shows it might be and Wario Ware should be a blast.

Multi-platform games are a mistake for the Wii, plain and simple. The only company getting it right is (god help me for saying this) Electronic Arts, rebuilding their stuff from the ground up rather than shoehorning the controller into games not designed for it.

360 isn't even fully backward compatible. Is that not a problem?

The game is better on the Wii -- only system-bashers think otherwise. Check all the reviews, they all say the same thing.

Who gives a shit? The game looks fine as it is, especially with component cables.

How the fuck would that be possible? Does Microsoft know how to use the force? Because clearly that is what would be required.

Sony and Microsoft are on their second online consoles. Neither of them had online games ready for the launch of their first online consoles. Did you forget?

Zelda, Red Steel, Trauma Center, Super Moneky Ball single player, Excite Truck aren't mini-games. Neither is Metroid, Battalion Wars 2, Fire Emblem, Smash Bros. Brawl etc...

All consoles launch with some crap cash-in titles. Remember Kabuki Warriors for Xbox? How about the pile of shit PS2 RPG's and hack-n-slashes at launch. Orphen anyone?

Red Steel is better graphically than 99% of GameCube games, excluding RE4.

Zelda:TP is a better game than virtually anything on the original Xbox.

Yet you support Microsoft who is about to unleash a steaming pile of shit in Vista?

Nintendo is still the most consistently great videogame publisher in the world and they have dared to release two systems -- DS and Wii -- that actually offer new playing experiences. If Wii follows suit with what the "underpowered" DS did its game library will be spectacular in 1 to 1.5 years -- the same timeframe it took for 360, and practically every other machine, to come into its own.

To sum it up: you have zero valid points. Go away.

  8. But the system doesn't come with one...

...they should have put one in each system.

  9. "360 isn't even fully backward compatible. Is that not a problem?"
I bought a 360 to play...wait for it...360 games. Yes, I wish all games were BC, but I fail to see how this hurts XBLA.

"The game is better on the Wii -- only system-bashers think otherwise. Check all the reviews, they all say same the thing."
The game doesn't look better for being on the Wii though. It should look good.

"How the fuck would that be possible? Does Microsoft know how to use the force because clearly that is what would be required."
I don't know what you mean here...

"Sony and Microsoft are on their second online consoles. Neither of them had online games ready for the launch of their first online consoles."
First of all, there were games on the GC that were online. Secondly, what relevance is that? If I make a console, should it be compared to the 2600 because it's my first one?

"Zelda, Red Steel, Trauma Center, Super Moneky Ball single player, Excite Truck aren't mini-games. Neither is Metroid, Battalion Wars 2, Fire Emblem, Smash Bros. Brawl etc."
You just named a bunch of stuff that isn't even out. Wanna know what the next first party games are? Mario Party 8 and Wii Play.

"Yet you support Microsoft who is about to unleash a steaming pile of shit in Vista?"
What does that have to do with the 360? I am not in the market for a new OS.

"All consoles launch with some crap cash-in titles. Remember Kabuki Warriors for Xbox? How about the pile of shit PS2 RPG's and hack-n-slashes at launch. Orphen anyone?"
I didn't see anything for the 360 that was as bad as some of the shit being peddled on the Wii...

I didn't do anything with the others because they're either not points or they're flat out wrong. Red Steel looks like shit, and Zelda can't match Doom 3, Riddick, Ninja Gaiden or DOA 3.
