I'm not part of the shooter community but I really liked Border Down. It was my favorite shooter on the DC, but I've always enjoyed horizontal shooters.
And you thinking that your opinion somehow invalidates mine on something as abstract as how much fun a game is shows that you're an asshole.
If you took a poll of people's 10 favorite shmups over at the shmups.com forums, Border Down would be one of the most popular games mentioned, along with Dodonpachi, Radiant Silvergun, and Ikaruga. All of those games have people that like them and people that think they're meh. Border Down isn't for everyone, but it's retarded to deny that its following, moreso than most games in the genre.
