Honestly, if they really told you that you need to get out.

I remember the first time I went back to my kung fu place (I had been there for a couple years at this point) after taking my first couple of bjj classes...

me - "man, this jiu-jitsu stuff is awesome!"

kung fu sifu - "you are wasting your time nemo, with your kung fu there is no way you will ever be taken down anyway"

me - "...but, we have never learned any takedown defense" (aside from crappy bearhug forms and other worthless poop)

sifu - "well, even if they DO somehow take you down, all of our forms work just as well standing as they do in any other position"

    me - "wat?"

Everything except for the last part is true, and sadly that is still a very very prevalent way of thinking in TMAs. All I'm saying is if a experienced six year purple belt can still be taken down and thrown on the regular, what chance does the average kung fu tosser have?

We all need to make our own mistakes I suppose, you just are taking nearly the same exact path as I took.

  3. I have not been in a fight since 1993.

  4. Oh yea, it's not about thinking I will need it.

It's more about "why am I giving money to a person that has this mentality" that gets me.

If they believe that, I can't trust anything else they say.

  5. Boxers often believe that they're too good for the ground and that their awesome punching just negates everything else. But I'll still go to a boxer to learn boxing. I 'd say it's still way too early to tell if Type Ryan has made any mistakes.

I should qualify my statement by saying that only one of the coaches provided his opinion regarding the utility of Kung Fu, not the Sifu (he's pretty reserved), and that coach REALLY immersed himself into the whole Kung Fu thing (he's been studying it for about 20 years). However, it's not like he disses BJJ or any martial arts.

Every art has its strengths and weaknesses (imo) and I guess only time will tell as to what kind of training I'm receiving. Right now, I'm having a lot of fun and that's what matters the most to me.

I wouldn't go to a boxer who thought that either.

  8. Fair enough. But some people enjoy having retained their focus on one sport. I wouldn't expect some old timer boxer who has only ever boxed and now teaches boxing at his boxing gym to even have really thought about the ground or kicks or anything else that isn't boxing. To me it's okay for him to be uniformed or ignorant about the rest of the martial arts in the world as long as he's awesome at what he does. If I'm not ignorant his ignorance isn't going to hurt me.

  9. Quick question for Pa and Nemo. How much do you guys pay for classes? TR's $70 a month is pretty darn good. Just curious what the rate is for the BJJ classes in your respective areas.

Focus on one sport is great and is what makes mma awesome.

The old timey boxing coach isn't going to be talking about how his boxing can be used on the ground or how "boxing has always had submissions in it" like all of these TMA people do though.

re: bjj prices - 100 bucks a month or more for unlimited classes is not unheard of.
