The Trilogy of All Trilogies

First off, if this thread is viewed as pointless or belongs somewhere else, please delete or move if deemed proper.

After watching Clerks II for the 3rd time, I began to think of all the great movie trilogies that are out there. The moment that got me thinking this of course was the debate over Lord of the Rings or Star Wars being the one true trilogy that takes place in the movie. I realized that there are several amazing trilogies that I love, but which one do I consider to be the one true trilogy. Wikipedia has a massive list of movie triologies, found here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_movie_trilogies. So what is everyones favorite movie trilogy, and I'll see if I can keep up with the thread and see what TNL views as the best trilogy.

When I think of movie trilogies, what comes to my mind are Star Wars, Indian Jones, and Back to the Future. These triologies are what defined my childhood and to this very day I still consider some of the best movies ever made. If I had to pick one however, I think I would have to go with Star Wars, and I of course am reffering to the original trilogy. Fuck the new trilogy. To this day, I still get goosebumps at certain parts of the movie and become sad when I am through watching them. Indiana Jones come in a very close second, and Back to the Future gets last place due to the 3rd movie being kind lame.

As far as Childhood Trilogies ... yeah Original Star Wars.

But as far as one that actually got better as the movies came out Mission Impossible. Because part 3 was the best of them all, and Two was plain dreadful. Most Trilogies get worse as they progress through the series. Take for example from that wiki list ... Poltergist. I love part one. Absolutely love it. But two was eh, yet Three was actually horrid. I can not judge Spiderman yet, due to Spidey 3 not yet released, but it has the potential to be in that elite league of damn good series trilogies. And I actually think BTTF3>BTTF 2, imho.

Yeah, Original Star Wars Trilogy, LOTR, and Indian Jones ( ) are pinnacles of the perfect trilogies to me.

Terminator would have made the cut if not for the uninspired third movie. Same with Matrix and the 2 latter movies.

I'd put Raiders and LOTR above Star Wars. As much as I love SW, the movies simply aren't as good as the other two sets of films - particularly because of Return of the Jedi which isn't as good as any in LOTR or Raiders.

Alien trilogy.

Alien = best horror movie ever
Aliens = best sci-fi action movie ever
Alien3 = underrated thriller; perfect end to the storyline

The fact that each entry has a different (and brilliant) director gives it the edge.

Alien Resurrection doesn't count in any way, shape or form to me. I view it as a side story rather than an official entry. It has two redeeming qualities: Ron Perlman and Winona Ryder. AvP is a blasphemous travesty.

LOTR is amazing, and I would vote for it, except TTT and ROTK don't even begin to approach the level of Fellowship.

Star Wars doesn't have the same hold on me now as it used to.

Indy is fantastic, but I see them as three separate, stand-alone films rather than a single narrative like the others, so I can't call it an honest, true trilogy. If we're talking franchises though, that's a different story.
