And I'd be willing to bet that the vast majority of these Castlevania and Megaman fans would much prefer a full-fledged console release to the portable versions. Which isn't going to happen, as you well know.
I'm not as militantly anti-handheld as dog$, but I certainly see his point. It's especially disappointing to see DQ9 on the DS after SquareEnix made such a drastic improvement (presentation-wise,) between 7 and 8.
Without the DS, Dragon Quest 9 WOULD have happened on a console, even if it was just the PS2 (which I would still prefer to a DS release.) I agree about the others, though.
Ok I found the article I read. Its in the Games TM with metroid on the cover. It mainly talked about how Horii was a fan of the wii when the controller was announced and how the huge number of DS's in Japan factored in for them choosing to go with the DS for 9. It also said that VIII's landscapes, sprawling vistas, seemless continents and 3D forests were what he dreamed of putting in the game. The tree patterned panels and single town icons were merely place holders for things the producers couldn't yet implement.
They also speculate that the stripped down battle system was maybe a place holder too. Seeing that VIII was horii's experiment with landscapes that IX could be an experiment in battle systems and online functionality. So maybe by X they'll combine the two and really put out something amazing.
I could see that as possible as a means to make a non expensive test game. Seeing how game budgets keep getting bigger and bigger and development times get longer and longer. The DS's huge user base, simple network abilities would be perfect to test out the new ideas without having to spend too much money. With 53.9% of people already complaining of action battles, they'd probably of taken a huge lose on such a big risk on a bigger platform like PS3.
And that's bullshit. A 2D Mega Man or Castlevania would sell like crazy on a console. If Sony was the problem then put it on the 360 or Wii. No way Nintendo turns down big name Konami or Capcom franchises.
They would probably sell as well as they do on Handhelds, but to do them on a console in 2d would mean a much bigger budget than the handheld games.
