Thread: Dragon Quest 9 Official Thread

  1. Grandia 2 blowed.

I don't know, I thought Lost Odyssey was alright, it was just too slow. And that game's combat system was old as shit.

Grandia 2 has a fantastic battle system, which really is enough to overshadow any issues in the rest of the game. It's one of the few JRPGs where I'm happy about getting into yet another battle. Lost Odyssey is pretty good, but mostly through the strength of its storytelling - though at least its combat system is from the 16-bit era!

  3. Your mom is from the 16-bit era.

  4. Did GameArts tm that battle system or something? Is that possible? It's not like JRPGs are shy about being derivative. Can't figure out why we haven't seen Grandia's system -- which really is the best in the genre -- copied more often.

Riviera retains the mechanics (albeit in turn-based form), but leaves out the key ingredient: little icons racing each other along the mini-timeline! Few things more satisfying than hitting an enemy just in the nick to knock them back on the timeline and give you an extra turn.

    Check.

  6. one thing i noticed that kind of annoys me. in older dragon quest games you could hold items in your inventory for use in battle. you could hold a healing staff without having it equipped and use it in battle as an item so you wouldn't waste mp healing. they don't let you hold on to any weapons, armor or accessories that are not equipped already. the only items shown in individual characters inventory are herbs and stuff like that. weapons and armor aren't even listed in the bag that you carry around.

i guess everything that you can equip are held in the wardrobe/equipment menu so it's easier to keep track of things/see what they look like on your characters.

+ i made a fur poncho an put it on my thief girl with the sleepy eyes. damn she looks cute.

They probably did because of players like me that would dump magic staves on everyone in the party. That shit made the end of DQ4 very easy.

  8. dumping magic staves on everyone in the party was the whole point of item/magic using!

and maybe my levels weren't high enough, but i found the end of dq4 ...difficult enough. the bonus dungeon boss was a pain, though.

I thought it was due to their no gear-swapping policy between players. You can't give good gear to another player because equipment is parsed out into its own menu.

Got my ship and headed for Gleeba, but can't meet the queen and can't seem to figure out what I need to do to trigger the next event. Any help?

You need to go into the castle and talk to some people. You will find that the Queen is taking a bath, but her pet lizard has gone missing and you must find him. I couldn't find him without consulting a faq

The lizard is just outside of the castle walls to the left, where there is a single palm tree. You have to go up to the tree and clap using your party tricks, and the lizard will pop out of the tree.
