Not a predecessor but Zillion for SMS was hawt.
I came in here thinking of the old arcade game Bagman, from 1982-ish. I'd mention Spelunker too, but that was 1986 as well.

This link seems to be down, so here's a good one, from Chahi's site:

Impossible Mission and Jet Set Willy were the first games that came to mind. I've never tried Antiriad. I'll have to check it out.

Nice contributions, guys. Pitfall 2 is a pretty notable game. I figured games like Bagman were too linear but I suppose they're a step closer than the pure single screen games like DK. Fans of Below the Root should check out Alice in Wonderland which uses the same engine.
Divide: Enemies Within always intrigued me but I still haven't played it. I was actually thinking about it the other day as the train I take to work goes by Radical's(the game's developer) building.
Again not a predecessor, but it always amazes me why Cyborg
Hunter is even mentioned with Metroid. Cyborg Hunter was
such a disaponitment, and it was too easy to beat.
Impossible Mission was actually impossible to beat due to
a glitch from what I recall. Friend and I never could beat
it.
If the Impossible Mission glitch was from the puzzle pieces not fitting together, then yeah, it's impossible. Or at least I never managed it, despite hearing that other people did. I once cleared every room with every piece, all oriented the right way, with over two hours to go. It was another sad failure, though. I suspect I was just really bad at putting them together.

It was Impossible Mission 2 that was impossible to finish.
They accidently put the last keycard behind the door unlock using the last keycard. Oops.
Well Impossible Mission for 7800 is impossible too because of a bug.
