    Yeah, the NES was newer hardware, and many of these games were on the Spectrum which was behind the times graphically.

  4. Spectrum was 1982 hardware. I played all those games mentioned in this thread, but they still don't come anywhere close the awesomeness of Metroid's gameplay.

  5. I'm surprised Montezuma's Revenge wasn't mentioned yet. It definitely came out before Metroid and is an exploration platformer. Montezuma's Revenge is on Atari 2600, Atari 800, Atari 5200, Colecovision, C64, SMS (later post-Metroid version of the game), and maybe a couple others.

    Hmm, I meant to include to include it right after Pharaoh's Curse but I must have forgot to paste it in. Great game. I never did like the SMS version, though. They upped the detail but ruined the charm.
