I talked with some folks who work for Valve and they said that the A.I. director was completely rewritten from L4D1 to L4D2. That's one of the main reasons why this is a sequel and not an expansion pack. It might not look it because you think you're seeing L4D with a New Orleans skin, but there were so many behind-the-scene engine changes that it wasn't technically feasible to offer this on top of the L4D1 engine.

They took a lot of feedback and player data to make the changes in 2. I'm not going to bite on L4D2 right away, but I've seen and read enough to know it's more than an expansion.

The campaign was cool, but I still haven't been motivated to take it on Expert. Versus mode gave me some quick thrills, but seems like an afterthought.

I don't know if I need L4D2. This is the first time I've felt indifferent about a Valve game.

I started on expert and never tried the other modes. It was difficult, but fun. It felt right for the game. I can't imagine the same tension on the easier modes. Perhaps that is why you didn't enjoy it.
