  4. Finished Bully today. Totally wonderful from start to finish. Some of the best writing and voice-acting I've come across in a game, and it was also the perfect length. Rockstar made Bullworth come alive - what a great setting.

    Next up for me is FFXII. I don't normally play RPGs - my last was Vagrant Story - so I'm a little apprehensive. However, the game's gotten a lot of praise from everyone, here and elsewhere, and its pedigree is certainly attractive. I also like what I've read about the battle system. At the very least, it's something different for me, and I'm looking forward to it.

  5. Speaking of Bully, I need to re-examine my pile of shame. FFXII is great, I played it for 100 hours in Jan/Feb this year and got stuck in the last big dungeon. I should just get through it, probably next year hehe.

  6. I thought Bully got a little lame toward the end, but it's still a fantastic game. Might be Rockstar's best.

    For me, FFXII felt like an extension of Vagrant Story, and probably the closest to another Vagrant Story that we will ever get. That team just has a style all to their own. Everyone disses the story to XII but I dont get that, and the dialouge in FFXII is second to none. Really impressive and not totally straight forward. And of course the gameplay craps all over every other JRPG other there. Im on my second run thru - ive never done that with any rpg outside of KOTOR and Vagrant. I hope Matsuno isnt done with making games.

  8. I heard (rumors) that Matsuno ended up at Nintendo after FFXII. Reportedly, the reason why Nintendo bought out Monolith is so that they can work under him on a new RPG for the Wii.

  10. 26. Tales of Legendia - PS2



    Only just barely started the Character Quests. I know I want to do Norma's soon, but I'll probably come back for the rest some time down the line. It's such a shame Namco didn't voice these, or I'd be much more inclined to drop the ~30 hours required to get through them now.

    This is one of my favorite RPGs ever, and easily my favorite Tales game, although I've only played four I think (Destiny, Eternia, Phantasia [not done], Legendia). Graphics are fuzzy, kinda blurry. Lots of detail in the towns, but the dungeons are oh-so-bland. Gameplay is so-so. Soundtrack was very good -- just short of excellent. Story was better than average, but nothing to write home about. Voice-acting ranged from bad to fantastic, and always kinda cheesy (which fit).

    It's the incredibly likable and well-acted cast that really make the experience. They're 3D, but animated with tons of personality. Also the funniest game I've played since Psychonauts. More games in general need to take this light-hearted approach, and RPGs in particular should look to Legendia for tips on how to portray character interaction and growth.

    I felt... happy while playing this game, even during the boring parts. Norma Beatty (below, left) is a heart-breaker.
