Thread: What does it take to close your school/biz?

  1. The only time my school has closed down in the past 25 or so years was back in 2003 when we had all those crazy wildfires in San Diego County. The sky was red and black for nearly a week, and the air quality was so bad that two local community colleges and several grade/middle/high schools were closed for that duration.

  2. It takes about three feet of snow. That is what it took to shut everything down in Denver last December. Things are still fucked up here from that storm.

It snowed for 30 minutes today.

I want Maryland to be encased in a icy tomb of death.

The school system here is usually pretty good about closing when it needs to. It doesn't take much, but the it snows so rarely here (we might get one good snow a year) that it's not a big deal. The thing is we have two parts to the school system-the city schools and the rural schools. The city schools are easy to get to no matter what as the roads are all well salted by the time the kids need to go. The roads in the rural areas don't get salted at all most of the time.

Naturally, the district office is in the middle of a salted area. Last year, we didn't get snow but there was freezing rain everywhere. It wasn't so bad that school needed to be cancelled, right? Tell that to the 17 year old who has never driven in the snow/ice before hitting an ice patch on a curvy country backroad. She was DOA at the scene.

  5. Where I live in South Jersey ... I would agree with Dole ...
A fucking nuke could go off and school would still be in session.
I remember still going to school with a Blizzard going on ... 1983. They then called half a day, due to the Governor(Kean) declaring a state of emergency ... fucking DUH! When he declared it at noon, the school was letting out in an hour anyway. Fucking gayest thing ever.

BUT THEY CLOSED SCHOOL FOR THE CHALLENGER DISASTER. But for fucking 1 feet of snow ... oh stay open.

Not saying it was petty, I was sad and understood it.

Same here, and even if they close, we are expected to do work at home.

  9. It snowed maybe three inches yesterday and my school opened two hours late, but, on the bright side, my teacher lives out in the boonies and can't get here so no class for me today. *goes back to sleep*

  10. In high school I remember it took about 6-8 inches before it closed, though it seems this year they've been closing with just 4.

So far college hasn't had to close, but it hasnt gone above 4 inches.
