I don't really remember there being any relationship between those two in the books...

Did I just block that out or did HBO try and spice that up a bit?

There are hints in the books. The things is, the books are entirely written in character POVs and I don't believe that there are any Renly or Loras chapters.

The issue with Renly and Loras is that their status (both individual sexuality and their relationship) was pretty ambiguous in the books. It changes the tone/mystery of things later on if you explicitly show that they are not only both gay, but lovers.

This was done for the female audience, obviously.
