I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.
The nominations went pretty much as I expected them to, I didn't really see any surprises but I'll give my half assed predictions because I've actually seen more movies this year than in the past
Best Picture- I've seen three out of the five nominees and out of the three I'm going to go with The Departed deserving the win, but I don't think it will and Babel will likely win because the Academy picks bullshit social movies that nobody really likes rather than something that is really good. The Queen was okay, but not best picture material, same goes with Little Miss Sunshine which I think was a solid movie but not great. From everyone that I know who has seen both, Dream Girls was better than Little Miss Sunshine and should have been nominated. Granted I haven't seen Babel or Letters from Iwo Jima, but at least I'm confident that Letters is worthy without seeing it. Babel seems too much like Crash which is at its very best is merely okay. Admittedly, the movies up for best picture are better choices than last year.
Director: Scorsese hopefully
Actress: Helen Mirin is essentially a shoe-in. The Queen was a pretty good movie and I wasn't sold on her performance until half-way through, but she is quite good in it.
Actor: I haven't seen any of the movies, but judging by the amount of buzz that Whitaker is getting, it'll likely be him--again, it's very similar to Philip Seymore Hoffman last year.
Supporting actor: Not sure, but Steve Carrell was better than Arkin in Little Miss Sunshine
Best foreign language film: I'm just amused that Apocalypto was shafted for any important awards, they academy is doubtlessly looking at how Gibson is a prick rather than a pretty good filmmaker.
And I hope Matchstick Girl wins best animated short, because it's so pretty; and Cars will likely win best animated feature (Beacuase Monster House was merely average and Happy Feet was a pile of shit). But Happy Feet was a pile of shit because of it's leftest hippie environmentalist bullshit tacked on at the end, so it wouldn't shock me if that fucking turd of a film won.
I'll admit that the Academy Awards mean nothing ultimately, but I still find them interesting and watch them every year. Hell, I'm even trying to see all of the films that have won best picture--which is an interesting exercise because there are some shit movies that have won (Marty, Around the World in 80 Days, Tom Jones, Crash) but at the same time some seriously excellent movies have wins (Godfather I&II, Amadeus, Annie Hall [Winning over Star Wars seems like bullshit to most, but Annie Hall is a better crafted movie without question], Gone With The Wind, so on).
You honestly think Rally's is better than 5 Guys? Really? 5 Guys is fucking horrible in that it's like eating a handful of lard but Jesus Christ is it delicious. Rally's is like super sub par in the fast food burger pyramid.

5 Guys definitely has the best cheeseburger.
Checkers isn't in the same league.

Best picture
“Babel," “Little Miss Sunshine,”
If either win id be happy, please no bullshit wins like "Crash." Horrible peice of trash movie.
Best actress
Penelope Cruz, “Volver”; Judi Dench, “Notes on a Scandal”; Helen Mirren, “The Queen”; Meryl Streep, “The Devil Wears Prada”; Kate Winslet, “Little Children.”
I havent seen any of these movies. So cant say.
Best actor
Leonardo DiCaprio, “Blood Diamond”; Will Smith, “The Pursuit of Happyness”;
DiCaprio needs to win this, but Will Smith is probably stealing the thunder.
Supporting actor
Alan Arkin, “Little Miss Sunshine”
yes please.
Supporting actress
Adriana Barraza, “Babel”; Cate Blanchett, “Notes on a Scandal”; Abigail Breslin, “Little Miss Sunshine”; Jennifer Hudson, “Dreamgirls”; Rinko Kikuchi, “Babel.”
Indifferent about any of these. Abigail did a good job on Little Miss Sunshine but nothing epic about the part either. Probably Adriana.
Best director
Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, “Babel”;
Fuck United 93. Fuck any 9/11 movies made for that matter.
Best foreign language film
“Pan’s Labyrinth,” Mexico;
Hands down, absolutely fantastic.
Best adapted screenplay
Sacha Baron Cohen and Anthony Hines and Peter Baynham and Dan Mazer and Todd Phillips, “Borat Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan”; Alfonso Cuaron and Timothy J. Sexton and David Arata and Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, “Children of Men”;
Borat was funny, and its got thunder going behind it, but i think Hands Down "Children Of Men" needs to walk away with this.
Best original screenplay
Guillermo del Toro, “Pan’s Labyrinth”
I think it is THE most original out of all. FairyTale for adults is the perfect description.
Animated feature
“Cars,” “Happy Feet,” “Monster House.”
Dont care, Cars will probably take it.
Art direction
“Pan’s Labyrinth,”
hands down
Cinematography
“Children of Men,” “Pan’s Labyrinth,”
Split, but Pan's was a lot more artistically driven and shot then children of men.
Sound mixing
“Apocalypto,” “Blood Diamond,” “Dreamgirls,” “Flags of Our Fathers,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest.”
Fuck apocalypto, also dont care for the category.
Sound editing
“Apocalypto,” “Blood Diamond,” “Flags of Our Fathers,” “Letters From Iwo Jima,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest.”
Read above.
Best original song
“I Need to Wake Up” from “An Inconvenient Truth,” Melissa Etheridge; “Listen” from “Dreamgirls,” Henry Krieger, Scott Cutler and Anne Preven; “Love You I Do” from “Dreamgirls,” Henry Krieger and Siedah Garrett; “Our Town” from “Cars,” Randy Newman; “Patience” from “Dreamgirls,” Henry Krieger and Willie Reale.
Dont care
Best original score
“Babel,” Gustavo Santaolalla; “Pan’s Labyrinth,”
both memorable. Pans and its wordless lullaby
Costume
“Curse of the Golden Flower,” “The Devil Wears Prada,” “Dreamgirls,” “Marie Antoinette,” “The Queen.”
dont care
Documentary feature
“Deliver Us From Evil,” “An Inconvenient Truth,” “Iraq in Fragments,” “Jesus Camp,” “My Country, My Country.”
Wasnt able to see any of them, but Jesus Camp was probably the most controversial next to An Inconvenient Truth
Documentary short
“The Blood of Yingzhou District,” “Recycled Life,” “Rehearsing a Dream,” “Two Hands.”
didnt see any sadly.
Film editing
“Babel,” “Blood Diamond,” “Children of Men,”
Any of the 3.
Makeup
“Pan’s Labyrinth.”
Fuck Apocalypto
Animated short film
“The Little Matchgirl,”
yes please
Live action short film
“Binta and the Great Idea (Binta Y La Gran Idea),” “Eramos Pocos (One Too Many),” “Helmer & Son,” “The Saviour,” “West Bank Story.”
Didnt see them
Visual effects
“Superman Returns.”
Superman was amazing, im sorry.
Those are my Oscars.
Jesus Camp was not a very well made documentary, and I will be disappointed if it wins.
As for Borat being nominated for best adapted screenplay, I don't think it will win because the movie was based entirely on improvisation rather than good writing (there were parts, but the center of the movie was improv). Cohen deserved an acting nomination more than writing.
I thought Dreamgirls was trendy at best.
