Thread: Modern Horror Classics

  1. Hellraiser

  2. Eyes Without a Face (1960)

Same year as Psycho, also has a notorious slice-em-up scene. Tone perfect, equally grotesque and beautiful movie.

    Don't Look Now (1973)

Try going into this with as little information as possible, and watch it transfrom from psychological thriller into pure horror.

Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (1984)

Had good kills, the best actors, the hottest girls. Even gave a little dimension to the series (Rob trying to avenge his sister, Crispin Glover's endearing sci-fi writer wannabe). The ultimate 80s teen slasher movie, and before the series went completely nuts.

    Agreed.

After The Final Chapter the series went to shit.

  4. The original Hellraiser and Nightmare on Elm St. movies were both brilliant. And both series went right in the toilet with the next installment.

Crispin Clover was in this movie, but he wasn't a sci-fi writer- that guy was in Part 7. But that's nit-picking.

I love the Friday the 13th series as a whole, but as fun, mindless slashers. I'll be the first to admit that they aren't very effective as pure horror movies, although some of the F13 movies certainly have a few tense moments here and there.

I had a feeling I was getting that wrong. Let me make it up with:

  7. My favorites:

    Pet Sematary (1989)

    "Sometimes, dead is better."

    The Thing (1982)

    "Hey, Sweden!"

    Alien (1979)

"What's wrong, baby, the food ain't that bad!"

Night of the Living Dead (1990)

    "You came back...you came back..."

Return of the Living Dead (1985)

    "I like it. It's a statement."

Here's my picks of Modern Horror Classics.

"The Ring" - American version is superior to the Japanese
    original. Scary as well.

"Devil's Rejects" - A Masterpiece and a work of genius.

"Fraility" - One of the most slept on Horror films of all
    time.

"Saw" - So clever and it helped make Horror Movies fun
    again.

"The Cell"- J-Lo's only great preformance.

American Ring is definitely not superior.

But I'm with you on Devil's Rejects.

And especially Frailty. That movie was amazing and not enough people saw it.

it's all opinion. i like the ring better than ringu, but i can accept that at least part of that is because of my very american lack of attention span.

but ringu has had a lot of influence on horror movies, numerous sequels, and it got a remake plus sequel in the US. it deserves credit for that.
