I just watched this last week and thought the exact same thing. Those creepy dreams were the scariest thing in the movie. It was just so cheesy. Hopefully In the Mouth of Madness is better because I just got that one from Netflix.

  2. This is the correct top 5. Any lists that contain a movie other than these 5 are wrong:

    Evil Dead 2
    Dead Alive
    Return of the Living Dead
    28 Days Later
    Nightmare on Elm Street

Fuck yes! all three of these were movies I was about to pick. Lair of the White worm just has so much shit going on in it. I also think Prince of Darkness is one of the best horror films ever. It's just creepy as fuck, with the dreams and the mirrors, and Alice Cooper impaling someone with a bicycle. And it's hard to beat a movie where the monster is just a smokin hot chick walking around nude.

I'm with you on this too.

The movie has soooo much potential but just comes off poorly.

I really wish it would be remade and remade well.

  5. The dream sequences in Prince of Darkness are incredibly scary for some reason. It's a shame they those up at the end of the movie by changing who comes out of the door.

I think who they have come out at the end is perfect though, it gives the ending the proper amount of despair.

  7. Not changing the dream at all would imply that all that they did to stop it did absolutely nothing. Which is much more despairing than the girl coming out as the new prince of darkness or whatever it was supposed to mean.

  8. 28 days later is overrated imo. Its not bad, but I just can't watch that repeatedly like Evil Dead or other greats like it.

I had always thought the implication was the girl was the second coming of Jeebus, meaning the end of times was going down.

  10. John Carpenter films just have this cheesy, pulpy kind of vibe. In some it's ridiculously overdone (They Live, Prince of Darkness, Ghosts of Mars), and it others it's really toned down (Mouth of Madness, The Fog, The Thing).

He's the type of director whose style is easy to peg - not sure why, exactly, but it is.

Before Lair of the White Worm, Ken Russell made Gothic, which isn't quite as bizarre, but has many genuinely disturbing moments. I need to see it again, actually.
