Betting on Duke is a sucker's game.
This is really it.
I laughed a lot during Bulletstorm and it was a similar comedic style. I felt insulted by how unfunny and obviously thrown together everything was in DNF, especially the the terrible humor. Shit like making fun of how long it took the game to come out wasn't even well done, and honestly, was a pretty big sign early on of how little they genuinely put into this game.
I'm hoping that Gearbox, starting from zero, can make a Duke worth playing. They're talented, but maybe there's only so much you can do when stitching Frankenstein's monster back together.
But seriously, fuck regenerating health and wandering around waiting for something to shoot. Anything new with the Duke name needs to be based on the Duke 3D demo and select bits of the full game. Extrapolate from there and forget Forever ever happened.

It was known from the start that Gearbox was just finishing the beta they got from 3D Realms and shitting it out.
At this point, I don't think the series is even worth continuing, but I have to wonder why Gearbox picked up the rights if they had no intention of doing something worthwhile with it.
Gearbox would probably have been better off rebooting the DNF project. Let's hope they take the flak they get seriously. The weapon limit should be gone next time, leaving Duke able to carry ALL weapons. Regen health should probably be put in only as an option- I'd like to be able to use medkits instead, but maybe with the ability to carry a few around similar to F.E.A.R. 1 & 2. At least the steroids pack a lethal punch and mix well with beer.
A new Duke needs to be more of a PC game also- DNF does seem to have been gimped a bit by having to cater to consoles, both graphically and in game play. For one thing, it's too linear. Going slightly off your path or blasting a weakened wall with an RPG in DN3D can lead to finding a secret weapon or other item you may want. Not so here. The replay value once you finish is a bit suspect.
I'd like to see a classic Duke mod for this, whether it's fanmade or paid Gearbox DLC- basically removing the weapon limit and putting medpacks in the levels.
Finished in 2021: 8 games (PC: 4, PS4: 2, PS3: 1, X1: 1)
When you hear Randy talk about the game, I don't think he's just bullshitting because he has to. I think he has a lot of respect for the guys at 3DR and likes what they've done.
And in this particular case, I kind of feel like I'd rather play the "real" DNF than a new game called DNF with a few of the same sets. They pulled that shit with Prey, and while I liked Prey, I'm still kind of bummed I'll never play that game they were working on all those years at 3DR.
"Gimped" by lame modern FPS conventions. I have a hard time believing this version of DNF is all that old, honestly.
