I did, I forgot about XS games. At least they've seemingly learned their lesson, though.

  2. Picked this up today. Here are my impressions:

    * The graphics are competent, but they're missing that detailed charm from Raiden and Raiden II. It all seems a bit sterile here. I guess I was more impressed with tiny bits of 2D shrapnel than I am with polygon ones.

    * The sound effects also aren't as hard-hitting as they were in the previous games. In Raiden and Raiden II, when bosses explode, you can almost feel it. That's kind of absent here.

    * The music also isn't as good. The music in the previous games gave a 'last hope' feel to them. You really felt like you were Earth's last line of defense and offense. The music in Raiden III is just kind of "there."

    * The purple beam (which is now green) is not as cool, or as useful, as it used to be. It no longer sticks to enemies! All you do is whip it back and forth. The red power-up may be weak but it covers a lot of area. The blue power-up is powerful but concentrated. This green beam is a little bit of both, but not as effective as either. It no longer sticks to enemies, so it's not as effective in covering area, and it's not powerful enough to use for concentrated attacks. I don't even want to bother with this weapon now.

Despite all that, it's still a shoot em' up, so I still enjoyed it. I was just expecting more, considering the Raiden name.

P.S. - Still no Red Star.

  3. Purple beam is back in Raiden IV, by the way, and it works like it's supposed to.

You're right about the explosion effects and sounds not being as satisfying. That can really add to a shmup. It was a big part of what made Under Defeat so damned satisfying.

  4. Is this game worth the money? I really enjoyed Raiden Fighters Jet in the arcades.

It isn't like the Raiden Fighters series at all. There's a reason it's called Raiden 3: it harks back to the original fast-aimed-bullets style of the first two (and a half) games.

From what i've heard not really.
There is only 7 levels as well as 7 difficulty levels. Not very much game unless you are a high score nut. There are some extra modes like boss attack etc but it's not very long lived fun.

    Fixed.

  8. Haha, thats true. But 30 bucks? You could buy ikaruga for that much.

  9. I think its 20 at Best Buy.

  10. Maybe he already has it and wants another (completely different) shmup?
