Thread: Photographers? Official

  1. Just going through these quickly I have a couple of comments:

The placement of the subject: Just because the assignment is something like Frame Division, that doesn't mean that you can ignore the placement of the subject. Take "Grids" for example. The subject is dead center when the composition would be a lot better if you combined your frame division with some simple techniques using the rule of thirds.

As for the previously mentioned two pics, plus "Division Into Thirds 1", merged objects, especially when there's a living being as the subject, is a no no.

Then there's lighting. You've got some backlight issues in several of these ("Low Angle Shot", etc.) With bright backgrounds you have to take the light at the subject, not from where the picture is being taken. Otherwise, you get a dark subject as you have. Also, bounce some light on the subject from the front.

  2. If i had to guess for unbalanced composition, it would be the square trimmed bushes, or the light pole that his head cuts off. After sifting through all my photos this one was the only one that worked, and depending on the shots had to ALL be as if in same scene. So if 1 shot was screwed up id have to redo the ENTIRE segment. It worked for the sake of the assignment but isnt one of my favorites.

Division into halves would be an awesome shot, but one of the main problems is i had to always be at normal angle and normal camera height or else the picture would not count. I would have had her a bit more stylistically posed if it wasnt for people at the beach looking at us, and getting close to getting a free show.

These pictures were supposed to be more "screen grab" types then anything, yet when i finished they seem more photo-fashionesque. I can see that already everything ive learned in my language of film class has dramatically improved my photography. Would you agree? What ones did you REALLY like and why.

When you're going out shooting bring along one of those collapsible car window shields (the ones that are supposed to keep your car interior cool) they almost always have a reflective surface, and you can use this to light your subjects better.

you can also fold it up and stuff it in your backpack so you don't feel like a douche carrying around a 3x4 foot piece of white posterboard.

  4. yeah some of the lighting was pretty off in a few of them, mainly those were me settling for a mediocre picture for the sake of just getting the credit i needed on the assignment, for the technicallity. This is a film class, we just needed stills to prove we knew wtf was asked of us.

Lighting is something i am now learning in my field production class, and now were getting into color in my film language class. Like i had said earlier, i absolutely despise how i can find no solid place to upload that doesnt destroy my colors short of starting up a web site again.

  5. I'm so glad I didn't put my posterboard suggestion in my previous post.

  7. A few photos I took earlier this year on vacation. They're pretty much just snapshots, but I tried to get some decent compositions.

Yeah, that one is pretty cool. I like how the skyscraper contrasts with the other buildings.

I'd crop out the reflection of the dark one on the scraper though. That little blotch on it from the building opposite is meh.
