Thinking about it, I suppose that at the focal length you were shooting at you were using the lowest aperture you could. With that in mind, just shoot at the lowest possible aperture for the focal length, maybe up the ISO and try for a -1/3 to -2/3 exposure. Shots will come out darker, but in RAW, you should be able to bring out the highlights. In decent lighting there won't be too much noise, and if the subject isn't too noisy, but the background is, you can use a lot of noise reduction only on the background without hurting your subject. Might be able to use a little on the subject as well if you feel the need.
