I haven't really had time to even look. Part of it was the environment too. I was in front with maybe 2 people in front of me and not a lot of room anywhere else. Had to hold the camera overhead and deal with the extra camera shake. The temperature must have been 100 degrees in that crowd. I was trying to balance between just enjoying the show and taking pics.

Hmmmmm, just looking at the info below, I can see a problem already. The image stabilization was set to "OFF", not sure how I didn't notice that. Also, looking at a few of the RAW images, I had the exposure compensation at +2, which I didn't want.

Who was the opening band? Got any other shots? I'm curious about some of that gear I see.

  4. Opening act was Dan Sartain. Sounded great live, much less so in the studio.

ill get other pics up soon.

All live shows are going to be different due to the lighting, but my main suggestions are shooting at the lowest aperture and highest ISO to get a fast enough shutter speed that produces the best photo possible. Looks like you camera goes up to 1600, though I am sure it doesn't produce the prettiest photos, but sometimes it is better to get sharp, bright photos rather than blurry, clean clean photos. When I do shows, I try for 3200 ISO, but sometimes have to go up to 6400 ISO. Basically though, it is just figuring out what works best with your camera. Good shots though and keep at it.

Thinking about it, I suppose that at the focal length you were shooting at you were using the lowest aperture you could. With that in mind, just shoot at the lowest possible aperture for the focal length, maybe up the ISO and try for a -1/3 to -2/3 exposure. Shots will come out darker, but in RAW, you should be able to bring out the highlights. In decent lighting there won't be too much noise, and if the subject isn't too noisy, but the background is, you can use a lot of noise reduction only on the background without hurting your subject. Might be able to use a little on the subject as well if you feel the need.

Thanks for the tips, makes a lot of sense.

The G9 is notorious for noise at high ISO settings. Although, they can clean up pretty well with a good noise filter, like the one in Lightroom. Fortunately, I might get anotherr chance to shoot Social D in November when they come back to the area. I might even have a new camera by then.

  7. Some old photos of my uncle's dogs I took last October when I went mountain climbing in Colorado. I was just messing around in some pretty poor light with my old camera. Thought I'd experiment with some of the new OnOne software I got recently. Has an action for creating IR B&W. Thought it worked well with these.

  8. Lighting was very sub par. Super contrasty and the new polarizing filter could only help so much. Love that shot, but I really wish the sun was on the other side.

If you're still interested, here's the best shot of the gear.

The rest are on flickr. I'm still pissed at how fuzzy they came out.
