Thread: Photographers? Official

  1. I love photos of dogs. I guess because I love dogs, too. Honestly I don't think the black and white works here. You have so much white it doesn't balance out well - and the coat of the dog matches the tree's so wonderfully (i'm guessing colour manipulation here). I prefer the coloured versions over any of the b&w's you're showing.

I'm going to Egypt but I am not bringing my SLR. I'm bringing my girlfriend's small portable so I'm not sure how my pictures will turn out. I would normally bring my SLR but I'm going to be roaming and touring so much I'm afraid I would damage it (or it would be too much to lug around). I just want something that fits in my pocket.

We shall agree to disagree. Of the first 2 I like the color one more, and there was no color manipulation there. As for the last 2 B&W's, I love how the darkness of the dog's fur stands out in contrast against the white. I actually think snow shots can make for great black and white if there is the right amount of contrast, though what you say does make me want to go back and work on some of them just a bit more.

EDIT: Ok, so I took what you said and ran with it. Now I am not sure the B&W's are going to be to your liking now, but your talk about too much white got me thinking. I went back and used Shadow/Highlight to get the detail back in the snow and add some much needed contrast. The snow isn't just a solid blanket of white anymore but now has some texture. Depending on the image, I also used Brightness/Contrast to bump up the contrast a bit more. I like what I see, but the eye of the artist is always blind just after making changes, so let me know if these are an improvement or a step back.

Good luck. Even with a point and shoot I am sure you will be able to snag some awesome photos.

  3. I photographed the 2010/2011 Belmont Rock Showcase last night. I'll start by saying that today's rock is not my rock. I found 3 out of the 4 artists very boring. Evan P. Donohue was the only that I found entertaining as he played some retro late 50's/early 60's style rock. The rest was just bleh.

I'm pretty happy that in less than a year, I am now shooting the shows in full manual. It really makes a difference and makes batch editing so much less of a pain. I was able to shoot all of the photos in ISO 3200 and 1600. No 6400 for me last night.

I have way too many to put up here, so please check them out at my flickr page. I'll post all the links to each set. Feedback is much appreciated. These are from my first run edits from RAW to PSD. I'm sure there are a few that need some level and curve adjustments that I may not see at the moment.

  4. Nice looking photos! Man, they all look like children trying so hard to look the part of "musician".

Anyway, were you the official photographer with all access, or did you have to fight the crowd?

I was there with no access. I just played the part, and I know there was at least 1 photographer that was there for the school, and he sat back like a little girl.

He did have a 70-200mm f/4 L lens (I was using my 24-70 f/2.8L), but he was stuck in the same 2-3 places. There were 2 other photogs, though one seemed like she was doing it for the paper and the other I know has a website, but wasn't exactly taking the best shots. I was the only photog there not afraid to use the stage to steady my elbows and take some shots.

Last show there were a ton of people trying to take photos right at the stage, but this time it was free game. There were some people who sat right in the front row and took photos, but have fun taking photos in the exact same spot.

I am currently working on my photos from the 2010 Nashville Zombie Walk this afternoon. Way more people this year, and some pretty hot zombies here and there. I'll post the link as soon as I get them uploaded.

  7. Went to the Nashville Predators practice this morning and took some photos. Didn't get too many great ones, but I am really happy with the few good ones I got. Shooting sports makes me really want the 1D MkIV and a nice 300mm or 400mm 2.8 lens, but I making due with what I have right now. The set can be found at http://www.flickr.com/photos/erik_un...7625145068494/.

  8. I was going to complain about the lack of goalie love until I clicked your link.

  9. Some more fall shots. These are a couple from a local park. I was jogging there about a week ago and saw this section with amazing light and decided I had to come back with my camera. The light was a little different today as the days are getting shorter faster than I thought, but I was still able to get the pictures I wanted.

  10. Some from Bad Religion at Irving Plaza, NYC, 10-20-2010. I was stuck right in front, but there was no way in hell I was giving up that spot. Going back on the 27th for another show and to try to get on the other side of the stage.
