B-Ri, used the D7000 for video yet? If so, did you get a mic? I'm looking to get a mic since the D7000 internal mic pics up the motor when auto focusing (yes, I can manual focus as well) but still good to get a mic for video.
Also, anyone own a Black Rapid Strap? I'm contemplating on buying a used RS-4 for $30 shipped. But I like the RS-7 and Sport because the strap is curved. Any problems with the RS-4?

I'm not as knowledgeable when it comes to lenses, so if I'm wrong, please forgive me. A 55-200mm isnt really 55mm-200mm. If your camera was full-frame (high-end professional), than yes. But on a D5000, its DX format so your focal length is x1.5 due to crop factor. So true focal would be around 85-300mm.
Since you're taking pics in urban environments, you'll want wide angle view to get more of surrounding areas. I suggest 18-200mm. Tamron is a great brand and easily affordable and in your price range. Sigma is another great brand but costs a little more than Tamron.
I currently own a Tamron 18-200mm f3.5-5.6 and Tamron 28-75mm f2.8. I borrowed my friends Nikon 35mm f1.8G. Nikon 35mm f1.8G is a great lens for a great price ($200 new). But its been sold out everywhere and if it is in stock, price is jacked up. On eBay, its selling for $250+ even for a used lens. I'm looking into a Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 but I can't justify spending $900 for a lens unless I know I'll be using it.
But I love my 28-75mm due to the focal range and the bokeh. I suggest going to your local camera store and see if they have any display model to let you try out in the store to see if that is something you like and would fit your use. Since I live in NY, I have B&H, Adorama and other big name camera stores that I can do that easily. If not, you can always go the renting route with sites such as www.borrowlenses.com and giving it a try before you go out and buy it. Prices are fairly cheap and reasonable.
I just met the president of a football league for the sanitation department at a bar and he asked if I've taken pics of football games. If they pay me, I'll be getting a Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 and I'll have my 18-200mm for sale.
Snap, after much deliberation, daydreaming and then failed Craigslist shopping, I've finally got a Canon 10-22 lens. 10mm is AWESOME. I can't wait to practice with this bad boy and then start selling out to do realty photographing.
Posted this in the Life is Good thread, but thought I would share it here as well. I found out the other day that I got the job as one of the Course Coordinators at the Santa Fe Photographic Workshops. The job starts June 13 and the summer season lasts until around August 9. I plan (hope) on keeping this job for at least a year or 2, and seeing what opportunities come out of it. I'll finally be where I want to get some great photos, meet plenty of greats in the photo bizz, and at long last be out west.

Congrats dude, sounds like a rad gig. West is good, though I may be biased.
No bias. The west is the best!
