I don't see how the last guy to become one getting killed has any bearing on whether or not the next guy to do the same thing that made him become one becomes one.
Obviously Chux has the right of it... they establish a mechanism by which an event happens and then fail to follow it because doing so wouldn't give them the ending they want, consistency be damned.
