Thread: Character and personality

In Final Fantasy 6, the little sprites that you see in game are just dripping with personality, especially with all the little goofy animations they have in the game. Then you look at Amano's full detailed artwork, and it just rips the soul out of them, imho.
Good point, I was mostly just playing devils advocate above (and trying to be a little bit of a smarta$$ while I was at it).

  2. Well, Characters in Shadow Hearts all in 3d, but have great personalities. I like their animations, their looks, and combined with extra character art, they look very nice.

Dante is also a good example of 3d character done right way.

you are so beyond wrong its not even funny

it doesnt come down to Poly vs 2D it comes down to an animators skill

just watch a Bugs Life and compare it some of the crap thats on tv now like the Jacki Chan show

Just because something is 2d or 3D doesnt make it better or worse

granted some series have an easier time maintaining their play control and gameplay in 2d but this isnt same series vs same series just cause osmething is 3d doesnt mean itll have less character then something 2D and vice verse

only ignorant people fell that way

Whatever you little bea bea, you know 3D sucks, and ESPECIALLY 3D animators!

  5. We have traded character and personality for realism and simulation.

Thats just the way it goes.

Conversly though, I will say that games that do have character and personality have it in spades and are more than picking up the slack.

  6. I have a horrible image of anything Midway pulls out of their ugly ass whenever I think of American developers and their lovely creations...(Gauntlet Legends characters, anyone?)

    Bad habit.

You can't possibly hope to compare a $45 million budgeted movie to a TV show that probably gets a $300,000 budget per episode.

  8. And television/film is a whole other story... not in the least bit related to the topic.

  9. Firstly, on the 3D vs 2D personality thing. I think he art directors for games just have gotten lazy, and therefor there is a general "blahness" in the personality of 3D games. I think in 2D, you had to work harder to express things, coming up with diffrent ideas. Not that you dont have to work as hard when doing something 3D. Just that it seems most developers seem to feel that way. They strive for motion captured movements, and true to life acurate details, and loose so much artistic direction and personality in the process.

Some games of note in both for me are...

    3D
Rayman 2: I dont think this game strained any of the systems it was on, but it looked gourgeous. The textures, the animations, just the way everything "felt" was soooo wonderful.

Skies of Arcadia: Again, not a game thats gonna stress a current processor, but had character models, and a world with sch wonderfull personality. It one of the things that made me play the game from begining to end non stop.

    2D
Sonic the Hedgehog: Is there any question? For me, this is THE game that set the path for all other games to follow in this respect.

Rocket Knight Adventures: That little oppossum sure was awesome! Yeah, I loved everything about this game. The main character, the little piggies running away when I hit them, the bosses that really seemed to think they were gonna win or something.

    Moving on......

Johnpv: While I do agree with you, I dont think thats really a fair comparrison. I mean, A Bugs Life was a big budget produced feature length film. Jacky Chans Adventures is something a mentaly retarded slug being threatened with salt is banging out every week so that little kids can have something to entertain thier minds while chowing down on Lucky Charms.

Take a look at that Final Fantasy movie. That had the personality of shredded cardboard.

Of course if you were to compare that 3D Starship Troopers show that was on for a short while, then definitly a fair comparison. Man did that show rock. Tons of personality, great 3D graphics and animation.
    A is for action

  10. Always turns into a 2D/3D soap opera..

    Sigh.
