This sounds terrible. I just bought a refurbed 360 and I don't want that shit dying on me.
I bought a 360 in 2005, and it is still living.

Are the problems caused by overheating? If so, won't a $20 intercooler prevent this?

Mine got the red rings again last night, for no reason whatsoever.
I like the system, but it's a total piece of shit. In fact, I'd go so far as to declare it the worst system ever made. At least when your PS2 stops working it's due to a genuine hardware failure, this just craps out any time it feels slightly and temporarily uncomfortable.

My launch unit died over the summer, but it was becuse I was constantly traveling with it. I have yet to move the replacement and have never had a problem with it.
Got mine in november of 06 with no problems so far.
No problems with mine (well, the occasional freezing but that isn't often). My brother on the other hand (got his the same exact time I got mine, same store and all) has had his die twice already. He puts a crazy amount of hours into his 360 though.

Got mine on launch day. It died in July. New one is ok though. Though it does seem to be getting louder.....
