Thread: Official PC Thread

  1. The same goes for it as goes for most Raiden games: it's a pleasure to play for survival and a chore to play for score.

Quick shot bonuses are really the worst mechanic. There's nothing exciting about shooting stuff before it appears on screen and before it becomes threatening. That's backwards.

That's one of the cornerstones of playing any shooter for score. I never understood the appeal of just wiggling your way through these things without actually playing the game. But I also seem to really enjoy obnoxiously difficult activities that serve no real purpose.

Raiden DX is kind of brutal but I always really enjoyed it. Even though the ship is painfully slow and the hitboxes are enormous something about it was really compelling. Probably the medals. I am a sucker for medals in shooters.

  3. Sure, it's efficient to shoot stuff early. That in itself is a reward. No need to tie bonuses to what I'd be trying to do anyway. That's waste.

Bonuses tied to getting close to enemies or bullets are much more interesting because those are things that don't reward the player organically already. Those are things that put the player in danger. That's why playing Psyvariar or Shikigami no Shiro for score is exhilarating.

What I mean is that both of these are tied to the same concept. Even if there is no explicit bonus attached, riding on top of enemies so they can't shoot and killing them before they can fill the screen with bullets is what you want to do anyways. One of the biggest reasons Raizing made my favorite games was how varied and complicated the scoring systems were. They were more like scoring ecosystems than the ONE BIG THING Cave approach. The Raiden games tend to lean more in this direction.

Raiden 3 was very boring and unappealing in terms of scoring though.

    Not that I really care.
Might I recommend trying it? Rocket League is a LOT of fun.

  6. Oh I've tried it.

  7. Vanishing of Ethan Carter Redux is out on Steam now. Same game, just ported to Unreal Engine 4 and the graphical enhancements that brings. A lot of this is subtle and the game was already beautiful, but it's a good excuse to finally finish this game after starting it last year.

Biggest improvement is that it now has a real save system.

  8. Is that a walking simulator?

  9. yea
