I found it to be very playable and ahead of its time when I played it back in college.
Unlike when my dad bought it for me when I was ten and all I did was walk around the opening area and hit a robot with a pipe.

It's a really good port.
I think the game is a unique kind of ugly, where the environments look good enough for 1994 and the sprites are really nasty, but that's not really enough to stop me. Especially not with the native mouselook implemented. I'd like to play through it soonish.
The two main things that would turn people off are Doom-era 3d graphics and the lack of customizable controls. The latter has been fixed.
I think earlier FPS/Adventure games like Mercenary, Driller, The Colony, etc. require quite a high tolerance for old school design but System Shock shouldn't be too overwhelming if you have played the sequel. Having a map that fills in while you explore (like Super Metroid) keeps it manageable.
